Meet Nia Chanel | Actress, dancer, model

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nia Chanel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nia, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
From being on three different dance teams, being on a varsity spiriline along with school and acting the past year has been pretty unbelievable. Surprisingly, I wasn’t too stressed as long as I find time for myself to relax. I also have a helpful calendar where I write down anything big, small or important that is coming up. I decorate it with cute calendar stickers and assign colors to each activity to make it more fun for me personally. Honestly, the growth I’ve made involving me balancing everything I do I am proud of.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an actress, there will be ups and downs. Taking on a competitive profession like this one will take determination and you might have to take some extra steps. For me, that means leaving school for an hour or two to do a selftape. Either fly or drive, depending on the time I have to be in LA, and make it back so I don’t miss dance. Especially if we have competition coming up. I want people to know the behind the scenes of reaching your goals and making them reality are challenging. If you truly want to achieve your dreams it takes a village to make it happen and some sacrifices on your part. But it can happen.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take them to Eggees. Their monthly flavors never miss. Then go to Westgate and see the stadium, hangout in the courtyard. In the winter there’s ice skating, right here in Arizona. We could also head out on the road to Bearzona, which is a drive through zoo up north where you drive through different habitats, sometimes driving right next to the animals. My most memorable moment there was when a bear cub walked right up to the car. Hopefully, it’s the first Friday of the month because then I can take them to First Friday downtown Phoenix where places like museums are free for the day. It’s much prettier at night with the music blasting and the beautiful lights all around.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shout out to anyone that I have met along the way. Starting off with Malakai. The writer and director who gave me my first lead role in her short film. It helped me get my name more known in film festivals and more. She also introduced me to more girls like me that are interested in the industry through her non profit organization Made in Her Image. Issa Rae is someone I’ll never forget. She’s so kind, funny and I’ll be forever greatful for her letting me be apart of Insecure. And it’s so crazy meeting people I’ve looked up to like Roshan from Shake it Up, Tyler Williams from Abbott Elementary. Yes, my family and I know him from Everybody Hates Chris however, I really know him from my all time favorite Disney Channel movie Let it Shine and so much more. I also want to thank my team for always supporting me and believing in me when submitting me for roles. Most importantly I want to shoutout my family. They all help out whenever and wherever they can. For example, before I got my license and car, someone would have to get me to and rom places because of my busy schedule. I have a great village of family and friends and I appreciate their involvement so much!
