Hi Nichelle, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Being in the customers mindset while running my business has helped me succeed. This habit helps me maintain high standards, build strong relationships with clients and continuously improve year after year. Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I run a small waxing business in Goodyear, AZ, which I opened in November 2021. Starting my own venture has been quite the ride, and it requires a lot of resilience. Before this, I spent five years working for European Wax Center—four years in California and one in Arizona. While I was technically employed by them, I realized I had been building my own client base, achieving daily goals, selling products, and encouraging clients to rebook their appointments.
However, I grew frustrated with the long hours, shortened lunch breaks, and a lack of recognition for my efforts. The owners often found reasons to deny raises, despite my consistent performance. I decided that I deserved fair treatment, so I took the plunge with the last few hundred dollars in my savings and embarked on this journey alone.
Three years later, I am incredibly proud of how far I’ve come. I’ve created a judgment-free space for both women and men who want to feel more confident in their skin, tackle hyperpigmentation, and embrace their true selves. I call it the “Homegirl Experience.” My goal is to maintain a positive atmosphere, ensuring clients leave feeling better than when they arrived. Sometimes, our sessions even turn into mini therapy moments, even though I’m not licensed in that area.
I take great pride in the woman I’ve become throughout this journey. My business stands apart from others because my only competition is myself, and I am fully embracing who I am. I maintain a balance of professionalism while being friendly and lively. I’ve never fit the cookie-cutter, modern vibe; instead, I shine brighter than the sun and bring an energetic, vibrant atmosphere that makes people laugh and smile. To me, laughter has always been the best medicine.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friends know that I’m a foodie who enjoys a touch of upscale living from time to time. For morning drinks, I love visiting places like Entoute Tea and Coffee or New Penny Café. I also enjoy exploring farmers markets on the weekends, with Uptown Farmers Market and Arrowhead Farmers Market being my go-tos. As a spiritual woman, I can’t resist visiting crystal shops—they hold a special charm for me.
When it comes to dining, Flemings is my favorite steakhouse, and I’m an avid moviegoer. I also appreciate the ambiance of speakeasies and nice lounges where I can enjoy a cocktail and catch up with friends, or simply relax in the serenity of a Japanese garden. If you’re around during the first week of the month, you can bet we’ll be checking out First Friday!

Shout out to GOD, first and foremost because I would have never gotten this far without him by my side. Never once has he ever failed me. Thank you Zandi Land Products. They saw potential in me and decided to make me their first ambassador and showing me more about the waxing industry I didn’t know existed. Also my big sister DaiDai, the other small business in the salon suite that I work at that befriended me during my first few year in business and MYSELF. Let’s never forget the loyal clients.
