Meet Penny Husted-Gamm | Fine Art & Humanitarian Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Penny Husted-Gamm and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Penny, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It happened fairly quickly. My husband came home from work one day to find me crying while reading the biographies of the women photographers of National Geographic. There was a desire I didn’t realize was there. My husband surprised me with my first professional camera later that year. I started shooting, and within a year I had enough images to show at local art fairs. Desire drove the decision for both of us. It was almost like we couldn’t not do it. And with my husband being an Air Force pilot, we had to move every 3 years, so the business also worked well within that lifestyle.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started out shooting fine art photography. I was naturally passionate about nature, and capturing captivating moments in beautiful places. People often call my work ‘serene’, and feel drawn to it for the emotion it evokes. I was blessed to have success shortly after owning my first professional camera. My first year of doing art fairs I did really well, and at one venue I came close to selling out of my framed work, which rarely happens! After that first year, we moved to Southern California, and I took the leap of applying to the prestigious Beverly Hills Affaire in the Gardens and was accepted on my first try. I won several awards in my first few years of doing art fairs.
Sustaining the success during economic downturns is more challenging. Creating art and selling at venues is expensive, so the art fairs have to be worth it. After the economic downturn of 2008/2009, it was extremely challenging to sell at art fairs. I pivoted for a while to work at an NGO with refugees who’d survived torture. For me, the pivot was worth it. I really loved the clients I worked with, and learned so much from them about resiliency.
After a short break from art fairs I took a leap of faith and re-entered that world. One important thing I’ve learned is to expand my reach. I have to think of other places to advertise or sell my work, and I have to be creative in other ways I can use my work. I’ve also learned that even though I am a very giving person, I have to be mindful of the whole photographer community, and be purposeful with where and how I give back. It hurts the community as a whole when people ask us to use our work for free, with ‘credit given’.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We have a band we see a few times a month, Notes from Neptune. Friends and family that visit always request to see ‘our band’ in person! So I would definitely take them to see the band we love.
We have a wonderful Mexican restaurant just a couple miles from our home, Los Dos Molinos, that I would take them to for the best mango margaritas they will ever have! If they still want more Mexican food, we’d enjoy the food and scenery at Aunt Chiladas Squaw Peak.
During this spring super bloom, I took my girlfriend to Butcher Jones recreation area on Saguaro Lake to enjoy the poppies and lupine. And when there’s not a super bloom it’s just a good place to kayak or hike. Biking along the canal is also a favorite thing to do, and if they’re feeling more adventurous, biking a trail in South Mountain. And if they’re still feeling adventurous, a segway tour through Old Town Scottsdale is a fun and unique experience, and a great way to decide where we want to explore later.
We love to go to Copper Blues downtown and enjoy their live entertainment and the downtown scene

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Troy, absolutely deserves credit for his love, support, encouragement, and constant belief in me. If not for him, I wouldn’t be where I am. Also, Rodney Rascona, for generously offering his wisdom, insights, and support.
