We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachael Burns and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachael, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My work-life balance has been practically non-existent since having kids and launching my own firm. Juggling the demands of running a business with the responsibilities of parenting has meant that one often takes precedence over the other, depending on the situation.

I’ve come to realize that work-life balance isn’t sustainable for me in this season of my life. Instead of striving for perfect balance, I focus on prioritizing what needs my attention the most at any given time. There are periods when work demands more of my time and energy, and other times when my family requires more of me. It’s a constant juggling act, and I’ve learned not to be too hard on myself when one area temporarily outweighs the other.

I try to be fully present whether I’m at work or with my family. I know that I am doing my best, and this phase of intense dedication to both work and family won’t last forever.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am not your average financial advisor! I work exclusively with newly single women. My specialty lies in the intersection of personal finances and personal crises. I help guide women through the critical financial decisions that come along with difficult life transitions, like divorce or the death of a spouse. I help them come up with a plan that helps them feel confident about their financial future.

I am proud of the business I have built from scratch. I still marvel at the fact that I invented my job out of thin air, and that it actually pays me! I am excited about the future of my firm and have many new developments I’m working on, like publishing my first book, launching online courses, and, if I have any energy left, starting my own podcast!

I started in the ‘traditional’ wealth management industry almost two decades ago. Like many people, I had a career existential crisis during COVID lockdown and decided to launch my own firm. It took a leap of faith to leave a stable career in the corporate world, but it was the most rewarding decision I ever made.

The initial decision to start my firm was easy, but the rest was hard work! My twins were small toddlers at the time, so my time and energy were already stretched thin. I put in a ton of blood, sweat, and tears, but eventually, the business gained momentum, and things got a little easier.

I learned two main lessons from my experience:
1. Never stop learning. As an entrepreneur, you have to learn how to be a marketer, operations manager, and CFO, in addition to your day job! Even if you are an expert in your field, you have to be committed to lifelong learning and self-improvement.
2. Go with the flow! The only thing you can count on is change. You can choose whether to dig in your heels or embrace change and adapt to the ever-evolving landscape.

I am truly passionate about helping women during their most challenging seasons of life. I have firsthand experience with planning for an uncertain future when my husband was diagnosed with brain cancer, shortly before our twins were born. I was extremely fortunate in that my husband’s health stabilized, and I felt inspired to turn my experience into something positive I could share with other women. I feel honored that my clients trust me during their most vulnerable moments.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my twin boys, Cameron and Drake. Ever since they were born, they have been the inspiration and the driving force behind everything I do.
