We had the good fortune of connecting with Riley Hoogendoorn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Riley, how do you think about risk?
Risk is what you do to make your dreams happen. Everything that you want to accomplish has risk, and your job is to create the best plan that you can possibly think of, combined with risk management strategies, to make that dream happen. When you make a good plan, and manage the risk, you should either succeed or be able to try again. Risk is great, but don’t let potential failure (which happens often in entrepreneurship) hold you back from ever trying again. For example, don’t get a huge loan for a business idea that has a low chance of success.

Hoagy Marketing had risks when I started, but I managed them very well. I quit my job entirely and started full-time on the agency the same day. This was risky since I had no other source of income. But the risk was managed since I designed the agency’s sales processes to not require any capital to start. I was reaching out to people on LinkedIn, I already had a laptop and cell phone, and I was on my way. I took a big enough risk to deliver large results and managed it enough that this risk did not keep me up at night.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hoagy Marketing is the go-to digital marketing agency for professional service companies, like healthcare practices, hospitals, law firms, and more. We’ve grown the revenues of so many companies that it’s just second-nature to us now. When we work with a new client, we focus on implementing our lucrative marketing strategies quickly to get to new revenue heights as soon as possible. We know how to grow sales for our audience, all we do it focus on our core skills of digital marketing and sales team development (which we’ve done many times). Rinse and repeat. Most professional service leaders worry about awareness or impressions, we focus on revenue.

We started from nothing and grew one success story at a time. One day we’re building a website for a mom & pop health clinic in the middle of nowhere, and the next we’re working with a nationally-known company that needs some heavy revenue growth. We just keep going.

We’ve learned a lot along the way. First, we learned that having a predictable sales channel was key to always having work. Next, we learned that building a quality and reliable team is required to deliver amazing results to our client. And last (so far), we learned that people work with people. Even if AI disrupts our industries, the relationships you have with your clients cannot be replaced.

The world should know that Hoagy Marketing is a reliable and trustworthy digital marketing agency that really focuses on growing revenue. We want to work with our clients for more than 30 years, we have no desire for a 6 month gig. We want to be important to an organization’s future because we bring serious value to their teams. That’s the kind of project we want to work on, and the kind of legacy we want to leave.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jessica Maeve (my amazing wife) for 100% supporting my wild proposal to start a marketing agency and to quit my job.

Jeff Hein (friend and mentor) who told me to start a dang business already.

Barbara Corcoran (Shark) for helping me refine my agency’s branding and structure.
