We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Lafayette and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The main reason I started my own production was because I was an aspiring DJ/ Producer and I didn’t know anyone in the industry and I how to get any gigs at the time. I realized that if I wanted to play, I need to host my own events and put myself on the lineup. So, I first started to take notes on how other companies and collectives would host their events, everything from how they ran promo to how they wound curate their lineup. I would even look at how their audience would react and respond to said events when they would get announced, all so I could fine tune how to host mine. I also wanted to host events to give others an opportunity to play and share their music in front of a crowed because I knew first-hand how it felt to not be able to do so. I was also the type of person who liked to help people and this felt like a way I could just give back and help other aspiring artists reach their goals.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
By day I am a paraprofessional for the Higley high school district, I help run a classroom for special needs students. This job has helped me grow as a person as well, even though I’m teaching the kids I feel like I learn from them every day. It’s the best feeling in the world seeing them thrive and grow as little adults, because the things we take for granted are some of the things they struggle with every day and to see them figure it out for themselves makes all the stress of being a teacher worth it. I have been doing this now for going on 6 years, it has taught me patience, to have a better outlook on life and to appreciate the little things in life. I absolutely love my job and my kids!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think I’d like to start the week by going on a hick and watching one of Arizona’s sunsets. I’d hit a few popular food spots like IN N OUT, Canes or Five Guys. We definitely have to hit the drive in as well since that’s about all we can do given the COVID pandemic. Also taking a day trip to Flagstaff or Sedona is a must, the scenery alone is worth the drive. I’d probably end the trip with a visit to the aquarium although I have never been its definitely on my to do list.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has always supported me on my journey. Knowing that I had their support made it easier to put more focus into learning my craft. I want to shout out some of my Producer homies (District 13, PR!CE, Dylan Heckert and Fluorescent) these guys have helped me grow as an artist, seeing them succeed pushed me to do better. I would always send new music I was working on for feedback and constructive criticism. Also having support from the local community has been a huge blessing. I honestly wouldn’t have the drive I do now if it wasn’t for them.
