We had the good fortune of connecting with Rodney Hu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rodney, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Phoenix, where my engagement in sports sparked a strong sense of competitiveness and served as a powerful motivator to overcome challenges. Coming from modest beginnings and dealing with financial struggles, I developed a robust work ethic. The obstacles I faced instilled in me a deep determination to transcend my circumstances. Reflecting on past hardships propels me to relentlessly pursue positive outcomes, contributing to the success I currently enjoy.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a former Wall Street veteran turned dynamic entrepreneur, with a background in firms such as Goldman Sachs and Bear Stearns (Bear Wagner Specialists). I’ve made a mark in Arizona’s cannabis industry, playing a key role in legalizing extraction. As the Founder of Vital Edibles and Territory Dispensary Group, I co-created Granddaddy Genetics and pioneered precision in cannabis dosing with The Medicine Room. Beyond cannabis, I co-founded the AZ Distilling Company, bringing the first locally produced whiskey to the state. I’m also proud owner of the iconic Yucca Tap Room, a historic music venue in Arizona, showcasing my commitment to business innovation and cultural enrichment in the region. As with many Wall Street professionals, I was able to develop a strong understanding of financial markets, economic trends, and risk management. This financial acumen has been crucial in making informed business decisions, managing budgets, and optimizing resource allocation.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love exploring various cuisines, and when it comes to Chinese and Dim Sum, my go-to spot is Great Wall. When I’m craving Sushi, I can’t resist Shimogamo. When the mood strikes for a juicy steak, Steak 44 is my spot, and for some BBQ, Little Miss BBQ is the place to be. If I want Pho I go to Da Vang or Khai Hoan. For middle eastern, I go to Haji Baba. And if you ever get the chance, make sure to check out Wrigley Mansion or Reserve for their tasting menus. I really enjoy the beauty of the Desert Botanical Gardens and Sedona for the landscape and sunsets.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This interview is dedicated to my wife, Kathy, and my esteemed business partners, whose steadfast support has been pivotal. I extend my gratitude to my family, friends, and dedicated staff across all ventures.
