We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Vizcarra and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sara, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in El Salvador, moving to the United States at 16. The transition was challenging, as I had to adapt to a new culture and language while attending high school. In addition to keeping up with my studies, I also had to help my mother with household expenses, a common experience for many immigrant children.
My struggles growing up and paying my way through college and dental school have shown me that hard work pays off. You can’t give up when you have a dream and a vision. My best saying to my mentees is: “Do not wait for the mountain to come to you….you must GO and search for that mountain and conquer it.” My tenacity, focus, and humility have paid off, and I am fortunate to be where I am.
I do not take anything for granted. I spend a lot of my free time volunteering, whether performing dental work with nonprofits such as Saving Amy or helping my son’s Boy Scout troop.
What should our readers know about your business?
We know patients have many options, but they choose Pinnacle Peak Family Dentistry and AZ Sleep and TMJ Solutions because they value our quality of care. We are here to help them stay healthy and feel and sleep better. We strive for excellence every time they walk through our doors, using state-of-the-art equipment to help us facilitate a flawless visit.
When we meet with our patients, we always clarify why each procedure is necessary and offer options that fit their needs and budget. While I’m humble, several Phoenix-area publications have acknowledged our efforts. I was truly honored to be recognized as a top dentist in 2023 by PHOENIX magazine.
To give patients a complete experience, I opened AZ Sleep and TMJ Solutions in 2018 to help treat orofacial pain and TMJ disorders, including teeth grinding and clenching, gum recession, jaw and ear pain, headaches, and sleep apnea. I’m triple-board certified to diagnose and treat these conditions.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Going on a hike is a must. I love Pinnacle Peak because it’s gorgeous and in my backyard. I also love hiking Echo Canyon at Camelback Mountain and grabbing breakfast at La Grande Orange afterward. Sometimes, I’ll hike Tom’s Thumb, followed by a bite at Soul Cafe. During the holidays, I’ll check out Las Noches de las Luminarias at Desert Botanical Gardens, The Nutcracker at the Phoenix Symphony, walk through Christmas at the Princess, and then grab dinner at True Food Cafe at Scottsdale Quarter.
Occasionally, I’ll take a weekend getaway to magical Sedona. The Devil’s Bridge Trail is one of my favorite hikes. Then I’ll stop by Tlaquepaque, get a spa treatment, take a yoga class (I love hot yoga!), and enjoy dinner at the Mariposa or any of Chef Dhal’s restaurants. I stay fit and active, and most of my friends say I have the energy of a teenager.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My dental and administrative teams deserve a big shoutout! I knew early in my career that I could not do it all by myself, and it takes great talent to run a business with the mindset to give it our all with a smile. I needed to find the right people to grow and achieve more, and I truly have. Learning to delegate and allow others to blossom in their careers have been the key to my growth and success.
