We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophia Toomb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I first started my blog/business, Moda Verde, in 2019. Sustainability was starting to become a buzzword throughout many industries, but it was hard to find true sustainable apparel brands that equally valued environmental, social, and economic responsibility (the three pillars of sustainability). Fast fashion is one of the top polluting industries, and exploits many garment workers across the world. After learning about the detrimental effects that the fast fashion industry has on people + the planet, I was inspired to help people shop more mindfully.
Moda Verde was the platform where I researched + curated sustainable apparel brands to help others shop more consciously, all while providing educational sources to why it’s important to care about the clothes we wear.
Now, in 2022, Moda Verde serves as my digital agency where I help create inspiring and educational content for many sustainable brands: from fashion to lifestyle. I believe education is the first step in anyone’s “sustainability journey,” which is why the content I create is deeply rooted in mindfulness and education.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a content creator, I am always looking for unique ways to educate others about sustainability: especially through video content. My goal is to always inspire others to consume more consciously, and advocate for change at a higher level. I lean into social trends to talk about different subjects in environmentalism (from fossil fuels to plastic pollution).
Too often, “sustainability” is used as a trend by many businesses. Greenwashing is common across industries. Through my educational content, I hope to teach others how to differentiate between “true and false” sustainability claims, and educate them that their actions make a difference for the betterment of our planet.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people + organizations that have helped me grow and learn more about sustainability throughout the last few years, and have supported my work in building a business from the ground up. My passion for sustainability stemmed from learning more about the fashion industry, to which I have to thank the Business of Fashion club at ASU. My last year of college, I worked at a popular resale store, Buffalo Exchange, that opened my eyes to the world of resale and ignited the idea to write my thesis on the “Sustainable Supply Chain of the Fashion Resale Industry.”
I furthered my education at ASU through the The Sustainability Opportunity certificate program–which enlightened me to become a leader in the sustainability space.
Lastly, I have to thank everyone who took time to sit and chat with me about their professional experience over the years. I’m excited to do the same for those looking to learn more and find their passion–because without the help + insight of others, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today.
