We had the good fortune of connecting with SoundAphx and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi SoundAphx, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
This outlet in fact chose me. I had a rough childhood so I had to be creative with the simple things. A pen and paper became the place I would let everything out that I kept bottled up. It became my safe space in a very chaotic environment.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art came about as a form of self expression. I grew up in a bad environment. Mom used and sold drugs out of the house. No real way to express myself so writing became the way out for me. Growing up I knew I always wanted more and had a bigger purpose. I worked hard, never used drugs and chased my dream like hungry tiger. I remember falling in love with music around 14. I was fascinated by the way these other people from similar struggles became so strong and great. At first I copied their style. At one point had a notebook in which I would write down lyrics from entire albums by listening to the CD’s and pausing the track after each line to write it down. I think that is what helped me develop my writing patterns. Regardless I was in love. I would sit in my room for hours! Trade CD’s with friends, bring the CD home and memorize the lyrics. I thought knowing each lyric was the coolest thing ever. Was even fascinated when a friend knew a song I didn’t. Outside of playing basketball this was my way out. Fast forward to high school. From 13 to 16 we got evicted close to 10 different times including hotels etc. This led to little structure and me at party’s starting as early as 16. All the guys would get together and put instrumentals on and we would freestyle for HOURS! This is how my style came about. A few of us even recorded a song and a computer and plug in mic took it back to party’s and put it on repeat! That was my first taste of all eyes on me. Meshed it all together and I went back and wrote an entire project! The project was called “The resume to the industry.” I wrote the project when I was 21 maybe 22 but did not record it years later around when I was 26 or so. From there I ended up performing close to 100 times over the next 3 to 4 years. Including appearing on two tours, opening for national acts such as Rick Ross, Twista, Joyner Lucas and a few others and even headlining a few shows myself. I started writing my new project “Words trigger” around 30 years old maybe 31. Record and released in 2022 it’s my second EP and is my best work to date. I touch on anxiety, suicide, god, love and many other touchy subjects essentially exposing my demons in hopes of it helping others with theirs. I signed a distribution deal in 2022. All my music ( 23 songs ) is now on all platforms. I own the rights to all my music. 100% independent. All royalties are attached to my business which I have an LLC for. My brand has led to many opportunities that I’m very grateful for and wake up everyday excited to continue to build. My hope is to leave a legacy behind that inspires. Although bad things happen to good people it does not have to define you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite parts of the city are out of the city! I live in the heart of the city and although love it, if I want to really enjoy myself I’m getting out of the city. Arizona has so many amazing small towns including Prescott, Payson, Flagstaff, Sedona. I even recently went to Jerome which is a haunted ghost town. I have in fact made it a point to explore more of Arizona outside of the city. If I have to stay in the city though I’m going to Tempe town lake! Amazing vibe! Great view! You can also get some grab food and even see live entertainment a stones throw away from the water. Eat dinner than grab a couple scooters and ride along the water…. Nothing beats it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
God first and foremost for he was there when nobody was. With that being said I would like to thank anyone who has come in to my life. Each person plays a specific part in molding me. In regards to my hip hop journey I have to give it all to the Arizona hip hop scene. From the mentorship to the opportunity provided by our community, it’s amazing. No matter who you are or where you are from there is a space for you.
