Meet Sppike Mike Muellenberg | Hairy Scary Spice of Spice Pistols. Manager, Bassist, bringer Bass, cheer and swirling hips.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sppike Mike Muellenberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sppike Mike, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk for us has been the catalyst that created our brand. Without it we don’t exist. Yes taking a risk can be scary but this is art. And I’ve learned over the course of my lifetime that art is it’s own entity. So for me to execute art under the limiting illusion of what society calls success is completely out of line. Art, in and of itself, is successful no matter how it’s created or who creates it. Now some forms of art may be better received or more popular than others, but popularity is a fickle beast at best. The only failure in any form of art is when it’s not expressed. Period. The greatest art is always art that’s expressed from the heart. From an honest place of respect for the ability to express it. No matter what the risk may be.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My greatest artistic endeavor has been creating and maintaining my band Spice Pistols. Rock and Roll can be the most infuriatingly messy journey you’ll ever take as an artist. At the time I conceived of the Spice Pistols I recognized that spectacle is what was missing from rock and roll. Yes there are bands that had done it before but somewhere along the way it got left behind. And I knew that with my background and drive I could bring it back. Not alone mind you, I have to acknowledge the rest of the band, John Risdon aka Ginger Binger Spice, Michael Fairchild aka Maybe Baby Spice and Doug Walker aka Mosh Posh Spice. Without whom there would be no band. We don’t just play music. We create a spectacle. We do skits and are really as much actors as we are musicians. Myself, as band manager, have spent hours and hours promoting and networking with people all over the west coast to advance the art that we create together. Was it easy? Absolutely not. We’ve all worked very very hard. For me the ability to stick with it has come from the commitment I made to the art itself. When this concept hit me I knew it would be successful if I commited to it whole heartedly. And that’s what I’ve done. And I remind myself of that commitment when I face challenges. Whether they be from inside or outside of the band. Spice Pistols is about fun. We’re honored to be performing and putting smiles on peoples faces. There’s really nothing better than bringing an audience into the moment with you. When they’ve all forgotten about their troubles and can just be in the moment. That’s the greatest reward there is for any perfomer in my opinion. Spice Pistols is all about inclusion. We want all humans to be able to enjoy the moment. To release the sometimes too serious attitude that the daily grind can bring to us. We want to help others understand that having fun is up to the individual. It’s our choice!! PEACE, LOVE AND FISHNETS!!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in Southern California there’s so very much to see and experience. I’d definitly spend some time in San Diego. San Diego for the local music scene. There is so much talent here in this town and the club scene rises to the occasion delivering great live shows. The Casbah, Belly Up, North Park Observetory, Music Box just to name a few. The Gas Lamp is incredible for it’s resturants and night life as well.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Bart Mendoza has always been Spice Pistols greatest fan. Bart is the lead singer, song writer of the band Manual Scan and San Diego’s greatest musicologist as well as rock and roll journalist.
