We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven & Carmen Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven & Carmen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
[Explorers Photography] We co-founded Explorers Photography (EP) with a shared vision—a platform to channel our deep passion for scuba diving, underwater photography, and underwater archaeology. With over 15 years of experience working in underwater environments, both in academic/professional and recreational domains, we have cultivated our skills and established a strong presence within the maritime sphere. Throughout our professional journeys, we have collaborated and pursued individual projects, each fueling our desire to create a business that not only showcases our expertise but also adapts to the ever-evolving technological landscape.
Our mission is to inspire people to explore and intimately connect with the underwater world, making it feel more accessible and relatable. Through our work, we strive to bridge the gap, making the ocean feel more accessible and relatable. By fostering a deep relationship with the ocean, we aim to increase awareness of its significance and advocate for its preservation.
[Steven] I have always had a deep passion for both scuba diving and photography and have immersed myself in the technical aspects of these fields. Over the years, I have obtained numerous scuba certifications and accumulated a vast array of photography equipment, which has enabled me to capture some breathtaking memories of my/our adventures. However, it was during my independent projects and missions that Carmen, my partner, sparked the seed of an idea—Explorers Photography (EP). While I excel in handling the technical aspects of our pursuits, Carmen’s creativity has always complemented my skill set, making us a true duo in our endeavors.
[Carmen] The sea has always been my solace, connecting me to a life of underwater archaeology, modeling, and photography. I was born in Seville, but raised in Lisbon by the sea, with a multicultural background (Spanish/ British/ Egyptian/ Portuguese). This upbringing fueled my love for languages, cultures, and ocean exploration, which I’ve pursued through both a scientific and artistic lens. Even the story of how I met my partner and husband, Steven, is intertwined with the sea. We crossed paths in coastal Zadar, Croatia, during our AAUS Scientific Diving training project. Together, we pursued PhD and MSc degrees in maritime and digital archaeology, lived and worked in different countries, and recently settled in L.A. (Steven’s hometown), where we merged our experiences in marine sciences and tech to co-found Explorers Photography (EP). Steven has always had a strong aptitude for technical skills and dedication to deeply mastering tools and gear. This innate skill seamlessly translates into his ever-evolving expertise in scientific diving and underwater photography. This complements my creative strengths combined with my scientific and engineering expertises, making us a great team!
Upcoming events and expeditions:
This year we’ve been dedicated to growing our business and we’re excited to be announcing the save-the-date for our first fine art underwater photography exhibit! Join us and experience our diving adventures on Saturday, July 29 at Venia Studio in Downtown LA! We’ll be revealing more details soon, so follow us on @explorersphotography on Instagram for more. We’re also currently co-leading an underwater archaeological survey and underwater photography documentation in Akrotiri, Cyprus in June, while also preparing for an underwater scientific expedition in Antarctica coming up next year!
Our Background:
[Steven] As a Los Angeles local, rooted in my Mexican/Native American heritage, my journey has taken me on a fascinating path as an underwater archaeologist (MSc). I’ve always had an insatiable curiosity which has led me to develop a diverse technical skill set extending beyond archaeology alone. I also find fulfillment in delving into the world of data as a Data Scientist in the realm of Big Tech. As an archaeologist, I began to specialize in photography through digital preservation of cultural heritage. This propelled my technical skills as a photographer as photogrammetric work (3D modeling) required nothing short of immense precision. I eventually expanded into directing photographic documentation for archaeological projects, media coverage and publications, while also leading photogrammetry projects and workshops for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Unexpectedly, In tandem with Carmen also being a high-fashion model, my career has also taken me into the fashion realm shooting numerous runways at Los Angeles and London Fashion Weeks. I was also the Travel Editor & Photographer for Fashion Shift Magazine in London for a two year period before dedicating myself more to underwater endeavors. Yet, amidst these diverse endeavors, I find my truest fulfillment beneath the sea, where the vast unknown awaits. It is in the captivating depths that my largest passion resides—an unwavering dedication to exploring and understanding the mysteries that lie beneath the surface of our planet.
[Carmen] I had a very multicultural and multilingual upbringing, born in Seville and raised in Lisbon with an English/Scottish academic mother and Egyptian/Spanish artist father. With their blending of western and eastern influences, I navigated diverse traditions, languages, and ideologies, which in many ways shaped my journey and ignited my curiosity in exploring, researching, and protecting our maritime heritage. With a PhD in underwater and digital archaeology, I’ve devoted over a decade to leading and partnering on archaeological projects across various countries, including Cyprus, Egypt, Oman, India, Spain, Montenegro, Croatia, Albania, and the UK. As an AAUS & ESDP Scientific Diver, I have a deep passion for scuba diving and scientific preservation through technological approaches, including leading photogrammetry projects for the Natural History Museum of LA County and media/tech-driven partnerships. On the creative side, I’ve worked as a published high-fashion and underwater model for 10+ years internationally, including London Fashion Week, Vogue UK, Visit Cayman Islands, as well as magazine publications as Features Editor for Fashion Shift Magazine. I find strength in embracing my diverse skills to bridge the gap between academia and the public through media and technology. I truly believe knowledge should be inclusive and accessible! Through Explorers Photography, we merge our passion for science, art and tech to advocate for the oceans.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
[Explorers Photography] Our immersion in the academic and scientific realms has presented us with adventurous opportunities that are typically inaccessible to the average diver or underwater photographer. An example of this is our upcoming underwater archaeological expedition in Cyprus in June 2023, where we will conduct photogrammetry and survey the remains of a submerged ancient Roman site and shipwreck. This project merges archaeology, photography, and underwater exploration, making it a unique environment compared to the liveaboard trips that are more commonly accessible to divers and underwater photographers.
Over the past six months, we have also been dedicated to intensive training for an upcoming scientific expedition in the Antarctic region. This is an expedition that aims to advance our understanding of these remote areas by assembling a diverse cohort of scientists and image creators. Together, we will venture into Antarctica to explore, research, photograph, and develop immersive multimedia educational tools. Through live streaming and other innovative methods, this expedition will share the wonders of Antarctica, enhancing public awareness of climate change and fostering a deeper appreciation for this vital region. These unique opportunities are an example of the distinctive path we have forged, where our ventures intertwine with academia, science, and tech, allowing us to embark on adventurous journeys and contribute to the broader understanding and appreciation of our planet’s natural and cultural wonders.
Our journey to the present has been shaped by two pivotal factors that have propelled us forward: a profound passion for scuba diving and a solid foundation in underwater sciences through formal education and professional experience. These pillars have been instrumental in opening doors to an array of amazing opportunities that have enriched our lives throughout the years.
Over the course of our journey, we have encountered and succeeded over numerous challenges. Amidst these trials, we have learned a vital lesson: unwavering belief in the value of our pursuits is the key to sustaining momentum during difficult times. Working for oneself is undoubtedly fulfilling, but it also presents tough or unexpected obstacles. The success of your business is greatly dependent on the energy and effort you invest. Each decision you make carries a deep influence, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning and purposeful intent throughout the process.
Every facet of our work demands mastering a critical level of skill and training. It requires strong dedication, strategic planning, and coordinated action. Each photograph we capture is carefully planned and executed with precision, aiming to immortalize the stories of the subjects or environments we shoot. We embark on our journeys with a healthy dose of respect and a mastery of our craft that distinguishes us.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When we’re not in the ocean or scuba diving, we love to go on night photography roadtrips to the desert in Arizona! We love celestial navigation and long exposure photography. Exploring and photographing Antelope Canyon at night with a knowledgeable, talented local Navajo guide (IG: @nybimages) was a particularly memorable experience for us!
If friends were visiting and up for an adventure of night photography with us, we would recommend the following roadtrip itinerary in Arizona!
Day 1: Arrival in Phoenix
Arrive at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and check into your accommodation in Phoenix, the capital city of Arizona. Take the day to rest and prepare your gear for the night photography adventures ahead.
Day 2: Sedona
Drive north to the enchanting town of Sedona, known for its mesmerizing red rock formations and dark skies.
Spend the day scouting potential locations for night photography in Sedona, such as Cathedral Rock or Bell Rock, to capture the stars above the majestic landscapes. Prepare for your night photography session by familiarizing yourself with the night sky, identifying potential celestial objects or constellations you’d like to include in your shots.
Day 3: Antelope Canyon
Depart from Sedona and head to Page, Arizona, to explore the famous Antelope Canyon.
Book a guided tour for a nighttime photography experience in Upper Antelope Canyon with @nybimages as your local Navajo guide. Capture long exposures to highlight the intricate light beams that penetrate the narrow sandstone walls during this magical time. Work closely with your experienced guide to find the best angles and compositions to showcase the unique features of Antelope Canyon at night. Additionally, you might choose to visit Horseshoe Bend, where petroglyphs can be found in the surrounding area.
Day 4: Monument Valley
Drive east to Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, a striking desert landscape dotted with iconic sandstone buttes.
Spend the day exploring the park and scouting locations for your nighttime photography session. Spend the day exploring different viewpoints along the South Rim, scouting areas for your nighttime photography session.
As darkness descends, set up your tripod and capture long exposures of the Grand Canyon, allowing the stars above and the subtle light from the moon to illuminate the vastness of the canyon. Petroglyphs are present in Hermit Road, where you can capture the stars above these ancient carvings to create captivating compositions that merge the past and the present.
Day 6: Departure
If time allows, capture a final sunrise or morning shot at one of the viewpoints along the South Rim before departing from Arizona.
Note: Be sure to check weather conditions, moon phases, and any necessary permits or restrictions for night photography in specific areas. Additionally, familiarize yourself with night photography techniques such as long exposures, light painting, and star trails to make the most of your nighttime adventures. Be respectful when photographing petroglyphs and adhere to any guidelines, permits, or regulations set by the managing authorities. It’s important to preserve these cultural and historical sites for future generations. Remember to also prioritize safety while photographing in remote areas, including carrying essential equipment, dressing appropriately, and being mindful of your surroundings.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Together, we met Erin Quigly in 2018 at one of her GoAskErin lightroom workshops. Erin introduced us to the world of post production in underwater photography. She is a titan in the sphere of underwater photography and is a member of the Women’s Diver Hall of Fame. We became close friends after going through her lightroom bootcamp and she has been one of the largest influences and mentors in our pursuit of underwater photography. In February 2024, we will head out together, with an expert team of scientists and image makers, on an underwater scientific expedition in Antarctica!
