We had the good fortune of connecting with Sukhmanpreet Singh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sukhmanpreet, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Turban is one of the most important symbol of honor and self respect in Sikh culture. As someone who ties the turban himself religiously everyday understands wearing the turban is a form of expression of my faith and the commitment to serve humanity. I started ‘TheTurbanTyer’ business because I was inspired to raise awareness in our community and to increase the community knowledge plus I get to do what I love, professionally tie turbans in any style for all kinds of occasions.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Turban tying is a form of expression of art. It’s not just taking a long cloth and tying it to your head. Tying a turban actually requires a lot of practice; knowledge about type of cloth and material needed. Years of knowledge, experience and my aspirations is what sets my work apart.
It’s definitely not easy, especially in Arizona where the Sikh community is much smaller than other states. Reaching out to the target audience is what has been most difficult aspect my business. For example; my first few customers have been from out of state, which is great; but reaching out target audience in Arizona has been struggle.
I want the world to know, even in Turban tying please do your research. There are over 85 styles of turbans and I want to create awareness of that. I am always willing to teach those that are interested in learning.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Arizona is such an amazing state and there are so many spots. I think it just really depends on what type of vibe we are lookin for. One place is of course, the Grand Canyon.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I just launched by business but I have to say i’ve received tons of support, and I’m only getting started. What keeps me motivated everyday is – I’m inspired by my culture and community, i have a great support system of family and friends and I’m highly motivated to keep pushing harder by my customers and their reactions when they get their Turban tied for their special day.
