We had the good fortune of connecting with Super Smack and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Super Smack, what matters most to you?
Confidence. Growing up in Arizona, I struggled a lot with confidence and used to get bullied for being the shortest kid in my class. I ended up finding confidence through performing on stage: in musicals, a cappella groups, and hip-hop dance teams. As an adult, I realized that everybody goes through a similar journey of searching for confidence. I started writing songs about that journey, and that inspired me to become a pop music artist, Super Smack.

I’m currently making my debut full-length album, BOOTY & THE BRAIN, which is releasing in September. The album is a love letter to all those who are finding their inner confidence, whether in careers, dating, or life in general. I make music as a way to step into my own spotlight and energize others to claim their spotlight as well!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I make pop rap music about love, dreams, and confidence. What I’m most proud of is establishing a music career and building an audience as an independent artist and despite not having formal training– I never went to music school and never had a label or industry connections.

In fact, I had a completely different career before, and I transitioned into a music career while I was in my 30s. That’s often considered “late” in the pop music scene, but I think the idea that you have to get your “big break” in the entertainment industry while you’re in your teens or 20s is a total myth. I’m a big believer that it’s never too late to start or learn something new, and you can always dream and take steps towards your dreams.

Media and viral internet culture today loves to glamorize the “overnight success” stories, but I think the reality is alot more sober. It doesn’t happen overnight, despite what the algorithms show you. Lasting success is a result of many years of consistent training, persistence, creativity, and heart. That’s one of the most important lessons I’ve learned personally, and it’s at the heart of the music I make.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Day 1 – Delicious southwestern cuisine at Valentine in Modern Manor. The corn cappuccino is fantastic!

Day 2 – A casual horseback ride around South Mountain to catch the beautiful Arizona sunset.

Day 3 – Catch a Phoenix Suns game at the Footprint Center!

Day 4 – Barbecue at JL Smokehouse. I’ve had barbecue in Texas, North Carolina, Kansas City, and all across the South– but JL right here in Phoenix is the best of them.

Day 5 – Go to the Heard Museum which has an amazing collection of Native American artwork and history.

Day 6 – Watch a musical at a local theater venue: Phoenix Theatre, Herberger, or Tempe Arts Center are my favorites.

Day 7 – Pool party and grilling! Gotta stay cool here in Phoenix.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to the late Gerry & Laurie Cullity, the founders and directors of Desert Stages Theatre in Scottsdale. They were the first to give me an opportunity to play a big role in a play, and the first to show me that you could write original stories that nobody had ever written before. I owe them so much and want to give a shoutout to them and their legacy.
