Meet Susanne Wellm | Visual Artist – working with photography and textile

We had the good fortune of connecting with Susanne Wellm and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susanne, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
I am happy to have chosen a career that is also my passion, I am working as a Visual Artist and are fortunate to make my living out off selling my Artwork through galleries.
I enjoy the experience of different kinds of art, and going to an art exhibition, a theater performance, a movie, or a dance show can be very inspiring for my own art work.
I have for a long time been a fan of Pina Bausch dance company, and somehow this is a hidden reflection in my work.
It makes me very happy when people reflect on my work, and it gives them an artistic experience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I work with photography as my primary medium. and I use an array of different techniques in my work.
I am trying to create a family album that was once lost. The album is build upon personal and family experiences, but also found images can find its way into the family album like a piece of fiction or lost memory. I am literally weaving small pieces of photographs together into an image, and the final photographic image appears almost like a textile.
I am very proud of my new book “WEAVING TIME” it was a good collaboration with the publisher, and the book is exactly as I dreamt it would be.
I have been working for many years before getting some kind of success, so it’s been a long and hard journey that took a lot of persistence. No easy way around, but luck is also part of it, meeting the right people at the right time. But most important is the passion and love for the Art, and that was what carried me through the hard times. My Artwork was the only thing I really wanted to do, so I didn’t and still don’t have a plan B, I see this as a strength when the times are tough.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I have to introduce to a friend from abroad who wants to see a nice place in Denmark, I will show a special place I know on the island of Fanø by the Western Sea. Its a place I visited a lot throughout my childhood. Its the southern coast close to the small town of Sønderho. I always get a very special feeling of being at one with the nature here. Its the Wadden Sea with the great contrasts; the tide, the vast expanses that appear at low tide, and the fact that you can walk on new land.
A must see if you are into contemporary art is defently to visit the Louisiana Art Museum in Humlebæk north from Copenhagen. One of the museum’s highlights is its sculpture park, an outdoor oasis that seamlessly blends art, nature, and architecture. Here, visitors can explore captivating sculptures set against the backdrop of lush greenery and the sparkling waters of Øresund. The park offers a tranquil retreat where art lovers can reflect and contemplate, surrounded by the beauty of nature.
My studio is situated at Vesterbro in the center of Copenhagen, it a trendy neighborhood with hip cafes and stylish boutiques. Vesterbro also have charming squares and parks. The distinctive Meatpacking District in Vesterbro, once an industrial hub, has been reimagined as a cultural center. It now houses art galleries, design studios, and a variety of creative enterprises, making it a hub for contemporary art and design.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
An artistic career is always build with the inspiration of other artist who walked the same path before. I find my inspiration in Visual Arts, Literature, Movies and Theater.
There are always the loving support of family and friends.
There are mentors and teachers.

There are Museums and Collectors who support by acquiring and exhibit the work.
There are Publishers who publish the work and make it known, and there are Art Critics who write passionate about the work.
