We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanner Garrod and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanner, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My dad retired and I wanted to build him something special. He bought property down in southern Arizona called Sonoita, which is wine country. I figured building something out of wine barrels would be perfect. Searched craigslist and found a couple barrels and went through Pinterest to see what can be built with them. Found some Adirondack chairs that really caught my attention. Being a metal worker most of my life, I was very impressed with how they turned out being made out of wood and all. My dad loved the chairs and so did everyone else that saw them. That’s when I did more research on what can be built out of wine and whiskey barrels. The name Double Barrel came from my dad, meaning Double (wine and whiskey) barrel. Started as a hobby making a few bucks here and there and 5 years later, it is now my full-time business.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My products that I create are very special to me. As my followers know, each and every product of mine has passion behind it. My goal, each and every time I create a piece of furniture is to make it better than the last one. My end product is always one that I am proud of. I post every single product I make, because I am proud of it. I believe the thing that sets me apart from others is that I do my best to create a product that compares to nothing else on the market. If I see a product from one of my competitors that I like, I will never copy it, that’s not who I am. I will make it my own by doing something completely different that has never been seen before. When you see the brand Double Barrel AZ, people know the quality and passion behind it. I worked very hard to get the brand known for that. My story and my brand has blood, sweat and a ton of tears behind it. These past few years have been difficult for EVERYONE to say the very least. I stayed true to what I believed, made decisions that differed from others opinions and put my faith before fear along the way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were to visit me for a week, I would be so grateful and make sure his time here was well spent. It would consist of drinking lots of Coors light on the back porch. Laughing and talking about the memories we have together. Talking about life, never missing an Arizona sunset and just enjoying one another’s presents. I would bring him around all of my people, maybe hit up some local dives and trail some back roads out in the country.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could never have made this dream of mine become reality on my own. Family and friends were the biggest part of my success, word of mouth is EVERYTHING. Getting into festivals and events really made the brand known as well. Biggest shout out is to My dad for the love and support he has given me through the last year of going full time. Mike Pigford for getting me into Arizona wine festivals. Top Notch Barrels for always supplying us with the best variety of barrels year-round. Also, each and every one that has shared my posts on social media, Very grateful for my followers and the support they give me. God, God has guided me down this path less traveled. It was the most difficult decision in my life to do this full time, but I put my total trust in him, and he has walked me through a road of hard challenges that lead to an ultimate success. Faith over Fear.
