We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrance Wilkerson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terrance, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I used to follow the ideology of work-life balance but now I just look at it as work-life integration. Fitness rewarded me with the lifestyle I have and my work doesn’t have a clock in and clock out format. Sometimes clients contact me with questions, conflicts and successes in their fitness journey, these unpaid tasks become very rewarding in the long haul!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

My journey has been very unconventional. I was laid off from a very steady job I had and began to work behind the counter at a gym. I was always interested in training, but never took action until I began working at the gym.

I took a personal trainer certification and aced it within a few weeks! That was the beginning of my journey. I worked as a trainer for 2 years at this gym before I decided to further my education and go to school to obtain a degree in Exercise Science.

I slowly built up my clientele and a great relationship of trust and respect with my clients. Many stayed with me and I’m happy to say that I still train and communicate with many of my early clients after almost a decade of coaching.

I was not prepared to become a business owner but this journey keeps teaching me new things everyday and that hands on experience that it provides aligns with my preferred learning style.

Between training and being a business owner I have gained a lot of knowledge from real life experiences. I have learned how to adapt and this is one of the best attributes a coach and business owner can have.

My brand Building Beasts goes deeper than being physically in shape. My brand is meant to educate clients on becoming better versions of themselves. I want them to feel more confident walking into a gym to exercise without feeling intimidated! I want them to understand how to set goals and achieve them, learn how to be persistent and make fitness a lifestyle.

My clients are very disciplined, respectful, hard workers and good humans. In Building Beasts the goal is always to improve every area of our life because it reflects the progress you will make in fitness. Our first principle in Building Beasts is: Train With Intention.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

I actually just got back from my very first international trip this week. However, growing up I never traveled or went out a lot. As long as I was surrounded by my friends and family I knew the energy, fun and love would make any moment and place a unique and special one.

It has never been about luxury for me, and I never needed a lot to have fun and to enjoy myself. The party was and still is wherever we were at and I loved that growing up. This is also something I learned to integrate in my group classes. Having the right energy and love around you can make any environment the best one.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I always have to shout out to my family, my lover, and friends. This is my foundation and they shape me as the person I am today. I also want to shout out all the gyms I have been associated with as these have all been stepping stones in my career teaching me so many valuable lessons professionally and personally.

One major shoutout I want to give is to Coach Ray. I thank him every chance I get for being an amazing mentor for me when I interned under him and that was a major switch in my career after I crossed paths with him.
