Meet Vivian Stearns-Kohler | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Vivian Stearns-Kohler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vivian, why did you pursue a creative career?
My earliest recollection is that I always was a creative, expressive individual. Even during my professional career, I always found time to take art classes and create. In retirement I have developed my artistic repertoire to include fused glass, oil and acrylic paintings, pastels, watercolor, pottery, wearable art/home décor, jewelry making and painting with paper. Additionally, I have written and published four children’s books and illustrated two of them. In another words, I am a multidisciplinary visual artist! Every day you will find me spending time in my atelier (art room), which is my happy place.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I am a “fearless” artist. When I initially started my art journey, I was terrified of a blank canvas or a new technique. As adults, we want everything to be perfect. Now, after putting many hours of “sweat equity”, I “see” new possibilities everywhere. By being open to my surroundings and impressions, this allows me to try new techniques and not remain stuck in a particular style, medium or subject matter.
Vibrant color, interesting shapes and new mediums/techniques are what inspire me. I am rather taken aback how I can create in one medium and translate it into another. For example, I design wearable art and home décor from my artwork. (See http://bit.ly/2IVAVTp)
My creative repertoire now includes fused glass, oil and acrylic paintings, pastels, watercolor, pottery, wearable art/home décor, jewelry making and painting with paper (aka quilling). In another words, I am a multidisciplinary visual artist!
It is important to me that I express myself through my art. Creating art is as necessary to me as the air I breathe.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many exciting, interesting places to visit in Arizona! In our immediate area, we have the impressive Superstition Mountains and Pass Mountain where you can enjoy the saguaros, mountains, birds, desert flowers as well as desert reptiles. Favorite spots to visit are Tortilla Flat, Saguaro Lake, Goldfield Ghost Town and Mine Tours. Along the way, if you are lucky, you will be awed by the sight of wild horses and/or burros that live here or you might encounter coyotes and javelinas.
Mesa has some incredible dining destinations such as D’vine Bistro and Wine Bar where you can relax to live music (inside or on the patio), enjoy local art (where I exhibit my art), imbibe your favorite adult drink and enjoy innovative, creative cuisine.
Another favorite is Board and Batten. This restaurant is tucked away, surrounded by lush trees. Friendly, knowledgeable waitstaff will advise you on wine that pairs perfectly with your selected meal. You can sip an aperitif on the comfy couch by the fire pit, dine under the stars or enjoy the modern decor inside.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Initially my mother was my biggest fan who encouraged me to express myself artistically. With her passing, my husband, art leagues I have belonged to as well as friends and family members, have encouraged me and expressed support for my art. I also am appreciative of the exposure I received from various galleries and art festivals.
