We had the good fortune of connecting with Wesley Bowers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wesley, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always created since I was a child. I grew up drawing and singing and writing. As I matured, I focused more on those talents and pursued them. I concentrated on music for a good portion of my adult life and in recent years have shifted my focus back to my visual art and jewelry. I have this innate call to create and I shouldn’t ignore it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It hasn’t been easy, but they don’t say “struggling artist” for nothing. I think having a great support system is important. Having others to help give feedback and support is essential. It is also equally vital to believe in yourself and to love yourself. Various ways that I’ve overcome challenges is by funnelling those hurdles into my art and mold it to my benefit. At times, I have also asked for guidance and how to circumvent various problems.

My brand is about self appreciation, self love, and affirming others in a positive way. I want to have people feel something and gain new insight and perspective with the world around them. My brand is very bold and vibrant and colorful. I also want to share more of my experiences with others and touch on social issues.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, Sedona isn’t much of a city. In fact, the closest metropolis would be Phoenix which is two hours south. There are some great places to visit in and around Sedona, though. Oftentimes, I would have my family and friends choose what they would like to do, if they had anything in mind, before taking them places. We would go on hikes because Sedona is a hiking mecca. Sedona is also known for its metaphysical shops and art galleries. Some of the eating establishments that would make it on the shortlist in and around the area would be Mariposa – a Latin-inspired destination restaurant, Pizzeria Bocce – a banging pizzeria with astounding pizza pies and cocktails, Crema for delectable brunch options and exceptional chai, and Mai Thai on Main for lovely curry. We would have to take a visit to Jerome, a registered and official ghost town. Other sights would be Toozigoot and Montizuma Castle, both of which are ancient native dwellings.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Brent, has been very supportive of my creative pursuits. I have had numerous mentors, allies and supporters over the years. When I was part of the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus, the artistic director at the time, Bob Mensel, gave me some opportunities to shine with regards to my music. Since I have been living in the Verde Valley, a friend of mine helped me get into a local art exhibition and that has really helped push my visual art.
