Why did you pursue an artistic or creative career?

Artists and creatives face innumerable challenges given that their career path often doesn’t come with a playbook, a steady paycheck or any form of safety net. It’s definitely not easy and so we asked a few of the artists and creatives we admire to talk to us about why they chose to pursue an artistic or creative career.

Pursuing art was the decision that felt the most natural to me. After growing up being surrounded by artistic and creative people in my life, I had made up my mind to surround myself with art in all forms in any way I could. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be an artist. I didn’t always know what kind of artist I wanted to be, but I knew I was happiest when I was creating. When I was a kid I used to make sculptures out of the mud in my backyard and make chalk portraits on the sidewalks. When I got to high school, I took my first pottery class, and I instantly fell in love. I started looking into artists that inspired me and it was here that I realized that art could be a job and I’ve never wanted to do anything else. Read more>>

I have always loved the arts from a very young age. When I got older and had my own place, I enjoyed moving furniture around in different configurations to see what looked the best, and or what worked the best. I had wanted to pursue an art career my first go around to college, but I didn’t think it would pay the bills. So I ended up with a business administration degree instead. however, almost all of my electives were in art. Once my family was grown and pretty much out of the house, I had some family members encourage me to go and take some Interior Design classes at our local community college. That is all it took and I knew I had to get my degree, work in the field, or start my own business. Read more>>
