We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Izzi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karen, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Spending time in a “zone” is the best time to contemplate, create, and grow. Each individual has many things to express and through art and writing. I feel best in creating with a pen, paint, or fabric. I am free. The mission of Conscious Creations Art Studio is to share techniques but also to build a creative community where others can thrive. I love people, of all ages, and enjoy encouraging them to develop their creative selves.

“We write and create because we need to create. We climb mountains to the tippy top to get the best view. We swim too far out to catch the biggest wave.” From her most recent book, ‘You Can’t Spit Far in the Shower.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Karen Izzi, PhD has been making art since age six. She enjoys her journal and has a collection of writings and mixed media art. Her bumper sticker reads, “enjoys long walks, making art, and poking dead things with a stick.” As a Metaphysician, she questions everything and finds joy in all things natural. Izzi founded Conscious Creations Art Studio in 2012 as a way to support and promote local artists. She believes in the power of love and fights for the rights of animals, people, and the earth. Each year CCAS hosts two annual Art Markets where numerous artists and makers share and sell their work. She also teaches Zentangle, a method of drawing that is “pen-to-paper” mediation.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Karen loves to hang out with like-minded friends and visits all of the coolest places on and off the map. She thrives in the desert and enjoys off-road exploration on the hottest days. Favorite restaurants include FEZ, Grotto Cafe, and Old Pueblo Cafe. As a natural foodie, she loves to visit health-conscious shops and supports local farm markets. For many years, as a caregiver, she specializes in working with the Alzheimer population of seniors in the surrounding area. She brings a variety of art lessons to them. She is happiest when she can provide joy and a sense of accomplishment to someone, especially when they thought they didn’t have any talent. Izzi also works part-time at Desert Sun Embroidery where she enjoys meeting new people in a customer support role. She believes in living every day of her life.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Most sincere thanks to my family and spouse for building me up, supporting every project, and not questioning my intentions or creations. Because of you, I can be me.
