We had the good fortune of connecting with JD Nash and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JD, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have been in love with music since I can remember. My dad used to play guitar for me and my cousins every weekend after having Sunday supper at my grandparents. He repaired an acoustic guitar guitar for me and taught me some chords when I was in 4th grade. By the end of highschool I was determined to write music for as long as I could. I went to college for music, a last second change from engineering right before I graduated.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My love and interest in music is what has personally kept me going as a songwriter. I can remember making my own songs up on the guitar from the first months I ever started playing. Experimentation has always been key to what I do. This came from there being a lack of guitar instructors where I grew up ( Moriarty, NM, 40 miles east of Albuquerque). I learned mostly on my own by having a subscription to Guitar World and Guitar magazines. This was quite a challenge in and of itself, especially with only a rural internet connection at the time.. I think being self-taught may have set me back in the years that I didn’t have formal instruction with my guitar playing, but my ability to create original compositions became a strength because it was my way of progressing in my playing.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My dad, my mom, my brothers, and my fiancé, Isla.
