We had the good fortune of connecting with McKenzie Kruse and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi McKenzie, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
To me, the meaning of balance weighed in favor of what I needed to do to make money. I was working over 60 hours a week in a cardiac procedural room with no windows, across the country. Endlessly, I would be called in at midnight, 2 a.m., 4 a.m., and sometimes stay through the night until my next shift would end. It took a toll on my energy and felt like my life had turned into a series of clock ins and clock outs. I was saving multiple lives every day so the price was worth it at the time! After over a decade of doing this, I came to realize that there is more to life than working insanely hard with only a two day weekend (maybe) to recover. The meaning of balance transformed into taking time for my family, for travel, and most importantly, to take care of myself!

This has sparked my passion to transition over to Financial Coaching, a family business. It wasn’t until I truly understood HOW my hard-earned money could work for me, that I realized the value of balance. I don’t need to work my life away in order to live the life I envision for myself and my family. With this, I am still able to pursue my passion, which is to make a difference in people’s lives. As a bonus, I get to educate others and help them discover their true purpose for money! How fulfilling is that! Trust me, I love medicine and saving lives, but now I get to help people gain the financial freedom to live out their dreams.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I remember in high school asking my parents and business teacher questions about my checking, savings, and opening a Roth IRA account after getting my first job. I was instructed to open them at the local bank, which I did. I would ask questions about, “Well is it better to open a Roth IRA at this bank or should I use the town’s bank a few miles down the road, because my current return seems to match my savings account?” I was told no, you can just leave it at the local bank. Now in my mid-twenties I have learned that opening and holding a Roth IRA in a bank is almost as bad as not opening one in the first place! Looking back, I really wish I had a stronger financial literacy program at my school to teach us, the rather simple, nuances of finance.

The matter of the fact is, we are not taught these things from a young age. Most begin to learn financial literacy well into their 30s and 40s, which I think is such a missed opportunity within our educational institutions! A personal goal of mine is to get into local schools to develop a Youth Financial Literacy Program right here in Arizona to help our youth get started on a path to financial freedom. I want to educate on creative ways to pay for college, cars, and homes, along with how to protect their assets and future families. We ALL can have an opportunity to achieve financial freedom, no matter your background or circumstances!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, I would suggest checking out Old Town Scottsdale, perusing the shops and bars, and eating some delicious tacos at Frank & Lupe’s Mexican restaurant.

Next, I would suggest checking out the Phoenix Zoo, especially the monkey enclosure you can walk through. I would also suggest visiting the botanical gardens, so beautiful!

Taking a day trip to Sedona and Flagstaff are also a must! Check out Dark Sky Brewery for amazing fire-oven pizza and great beers! Some of the best hikes can be found within the areas of these two towns. Just south of Flagstaff proper are some of my favorite places to camp with friends.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my Husband, Gianni. He is my biggest supporter!
