We had the good fortune of connecting with Arlette Pender and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Arlette, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’m definitely a risk taker. Taking risks to me is necessary. I was raised in Brooklyn Ny. To two hard working parents there wasn’t lots of money however I always had lots of drive to become an independent person. I love doing things the way I wanted and had my own way. Although, taking risks without having a financial support system or a stash of $$$ somewhere I definitely had to rely on my work ethic (my grind) to get things done also ending with raising 3 children. I struggled and I believe that it (the struggle builds character) it did in me and also drive
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Wow this is a lot. I would say the that I’m most proud of my organization “My Hair Is Beautiful” . A self esteem-program/workshop for young girls ages 8-14. I’m Also proud of my work in film. Industry and working with living legends Sister Sledge “We are Family” also my product line now rebrand from HAIRLOKS system for natural hair to HAIR & SCALP LOVE.❤️ I believe that I reached this level of “celebrity Stylist “ and more by being consistent in hard work and reliability. I’ve had my work featured in many publications and advertisements..it wasn’t easy to say the least because I was also raising my children as a single parent and industry work is quite demanding. I have to say that I over came the challenges with prayer, family support and determination. The lessons I’ve learned and still learning is to save my money be thankful, be on time and to be as prepared for anything. I’ve also learned to be honest. I want the world to know that my brand is one of integrity and prides itself on customer service and I’m an experience. My story is one of struggles, strength, hard work and most of all Passion.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Ruth’s Chris on Scottsdale& Indian bend for drinks and a great steak I would hand out at “Blue Martini for live music.
I would make sure their hair was done at
HAIRLOKS by ARLETTE for a great Natural Hair Care experience
I would have them shop at Scottsdale Fashion Square
And end it with a hike at any mountain to see the great view.
End with food at culinary Drop out.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother who is deceased now, and also my children. When I started doing hair it was because my mother was a woman who loved to see the beauty in others. She was a teacher by profession but a self taught beautician for the community of young children of whom she taught and saw each day. My mother Glendora Pender was determined to share her beauty secrets with the neighborhood of young women and family. I wanted to do the same because I saw the satisfaction in the eyes of the girls which birthed “My Hair Is Beautiful org” a series of workshops for young girls ages 8-14 we inspire, educate & empower the girls to create careers for themselves, to follow their dreams and to love themselves by what they see in the mirror. Founded in 2011 by My daughter Atiyya Pender, my cousin Marimba Johnson and Myself in 2011. MHIB was first installed at the Mary J Blige center for women in Westchester Nyc. Where we mentored 15 girls once monthly. We have also held workshops in Atl,and throughout PHX Az including the youth correctional facility here in PHX and much more. We have consistently held workshops once a quarter and we were featured in Az informant as well as kjazz talk radio. Since October MHIB has received nonprofit status and we are looking for funding to move forward in opening a training center for those who want to become a natural hairstylist, make up artist or barber. This is what I’m working on. I’m wanting to help the community
