We had the good fortune of connecting with David Quintanilla, PMP and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I was a kid, I have been telling stories. Whether it was through my writing in the form of plays or through short films, I enjoyed sharing what was in my head with the world. However, as adulthood and its accompanying responsibilities gradually took over my life., I stopped prioritizing my artistic endeavors. In 2019, I decided to change that. I picked up a camera for the first time in several years and decided that I would begin creating again. I gave photography a try and created an Instagram account merely to give me an outlet for my new hobby. From there, my passion reignited to where I am now consistently producing not only photographs, but articles and videos again.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As I mentioned earlier, storytelling is important to me. My goal in either my short films or in my photography is take the viewer on a journey and encourage them to engage emotionally with the piece. While the technical components of a photo or video are valuable, they are secondary to ensuring that each photo and video stands on its as a unique expression of my point of view. In the travel space, especially at theme parks, that can be difficult as the locations and subjects have been photographed dozens of times. That is where I try to bring my own voice and perspective, so the viewer feels a connection to me as well as the subject. It’s that connection that has brought me success. We are truly a community (or a “Q-mmunity” as I jokingly refer them.) We share, discuss and enjoy each others company…virtually.
As an introvert, it wasn’t easy to be that vulnerable or transparent. Because most of the engagement occurs in the digital space, as opposed to in person, you never truly know how someone is reacting to a photo or video. I simply share what I create with the world in the hopes that it will be received well. Thankfully, the vast majority of my interactions have been positive and have encouraged me to continue to grow. There are plenty of joyful, positive people out there and if that is the energy you put out, they will find you.
Ultimately, if there is one thing that anyone was to take away from my story, it is that your level of effort will be rewarded. I strive to ensure that if a person takes the time to engage with a photo or video of mine, their time is not wasted. I appreciate and value the minutes they spend with it, and my hope is that it provides something of value to life, whether it be a new perspective, a good chuckle, or simply a smile to help them through their day.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One gem that I discovered in Arizona was the Grand Canyon Railway. I had never visited the the Grand Canyon and was researching travel excursions for our family when I learned about the Railway and what it offered. Located in Williams, approximately 3 hours from Phoenix, the train depot is adjacent to the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel and offers a fun, leisurely way to head to the Canyon. While riding, you can enjoy tales about the railway, cowboy entertainers, a snack car, and train robbery. It was so much to sit and enjoy the scenery roll by and, after hiking around the canyon, not have to worry about driving back to our hotel.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would credit two individuals as being crucial in my journey. First is my wife, Jennifer. From the beginning she has been incredibly supportive of my artistic efforts. Not only has she been an encouraging presence in the development of my photography, but she has also been willing to jump in front of camera when asked. (I always say that Jenn is secret star of my work.) Without her involvement, I doubt I would be where I am today.
The other person I need to call out is my best friend, Tara. She has been crucial in the development and implementation of my goals. Our conversations always focus on growth and personal development, providing that extra bit of motivation to go out and seize the day. The phrase “iron sharpens iron” would definitely apply to our friendship.
