We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business was a decision that came from a place of necessity for me. After experiencing three significant losses back to back, including the birth and death of my daughter in November 2015, my divorce being finalised in December 2015, and relocating my small children from Hawaii to Mississippi in January 2016, my mental health was at its lowest point. I knew I needed to do something to take care of myself and my family, and starting a business seemed like the best option. It allowed me to have more control over my schedule and work from home, which was crucial during that time. It also gave me a sense of purpose and helped me focus on something positive, despite the challenges I was facing. Overall, starting my own business was a way for me to take charge of my life and find a way forward after a difficult period.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an artist, what sets me apart from others is my use of vibrant colors and bold prints in my designs. I am most proud of the fact that my art is not just aesthetically pleasing, but also helps support local artisans in different parts of Africa. By using locally handmade items, I am able to contribute to the economic livelihood of individual artisans while also promoting sustainability. Getting to where I am today professionally was not easy. I faced numerous challenges along the way, but I overcame them by staying true to who I am and my passion for my craft. I found a way to turn my pain into passion and the lessons I’ve learned include the importance of persistence, hard work, and believing in oneself.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that it is perfectly okay to incorporate color and prints into everyday wardrobe. By doing so, we can add a touch of vibrancy and positivity to our lives. So, let’s embrace the beauty of color and prints and make it worth it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting and I wanted to show them the best time ever in Phoenix, I would plan a week-long itinerary. First, I would reserve a room at The Egyptian Motor Hotel on 765 Grand Ave in downtown Phoenix since it has just been renovated and has a unique decor that is unmatched. We would also enjoy meals at Chilte, the hotel’s restaurant, and Coyote Mexican Fusion Cuisine, which is known for partnering with Phoenix Fashion Week, The Leading Fashion Industry event in the southwest and highlighting emerging fashion designers.. We would definitely check out Afrocentric events and places by following AfroAZ IG where Moe plans the best get-togethers. We would also visit Corella & Co and their Kaizen on-site Japanese restaurant . For drinks and vibes, we would stop by Trevor’s. Overall, Alani Nu would keep us energised enough to show my friends the most fun, interesting, and exciting people, places, and things in Phoenix.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In my story, there are a few individuals who deserve credit and recognition. First and foremost, I have to thank God for his unwavering presence and guidance during my struggles. Secondly, my children, Kaileb and Laila, have been my rock. They’ve shown me unconditional love and grace, and have handled the losses we’ve faced as a family with class and resilience beyond their years. Lastly, I have to acknowledge my mentors, April Williams and Pamela Berry Johnson. They have been true God-sends, offering endless support and guidance throughout my journey.
