Meet Dustie Northey | Owner and Maker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dustie Northey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dustie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I began leathercrafting, initially I had no intention of having a small business. I was standing at a department store, trying to decide between two different bags. Each had aspects I liked, and didn’t like. I have always had the “I can make that” mentality, so it occurred to me that I didn’t have to choose!
I immediately went home, did way too much research, bought all the supplies and made my own bag. Everything snowballed from there. My mom liked my bag, and asked me to make her one. Then it was my Meemaw, other family members, and eventually included members of my community asking for custom bags, hats, wallets, belts, and more. To my suprise, it grew into custom orders from across the US!
The thought process went from “I can make my own!”, to discovering the need for affordable handmade real leather goods.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our brand is based around the quality of the handmade goods we provide to our customers. Repeat customers that bring their original purchases from 2016 when I started The Dustie Attic is the best feeling in the world. This tells me I am on the right path and assures me I am creating goods the way they should be done. Heirloom quality at an affordable price.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would say early morning fishing/camping in Sultan, Elbe, and Morton all week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband Killian deserves the biggest credit/recognition possible.
Similar to most makers, I have times where I am nothing short of burnt out on creating anything. I’ll have periods of time where the need to make anything is completely absent. Killian has always pushed me to finish what I started, he has the best ideas when I have a creative block, and he doesn’t let me procrastinate (which I have a tendency to do.)
I appreciate his support and love more than I could ever thank him for.
I’d also like to thank my family, friends and community for supporting my little American dream. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
