We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
Easy! Investing in a studio membership! In 2022, I joined The Hive Studios in Phoenix. While the it can be scary to take on new expenses, having a studio has not only paid for itself with booking photoshoots but with easing the process of taking care of your clients.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m best know for my headshots and capturing people’s best impression of themselves. One of the greatest feelings is sending a client out of the studio feeling better than when they first walked into the studio. This one time I was working with a first-time client who said he hates pictures but when he saw the first image, he gained massive confidence and didn’t want to leave. As Peter Hurley has said, the headshot should convey confidence and approachability.

It might seem like it’s overstated by professionals and creatives but it is all about the hustle. I believe the most difficult part of the business is not only sustaining momentum but building on it as well. Making sure you’re getting that feedback from your clients and staying on top of social media which is a huge undertaking in itself.

One of the most valuable lessons anyone can learn is that it’s not only about building relationships but nurturing them as well. That is what will have them coming back to you.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love this question. It makes me feel like I’m sitting with Anthony Bourdain in an episode of Parts Unknown.

For one, I love local coffee shops! (What photographer doesn’t!) It’s a toss up because there are so many unique cafes in the valley. Lola Coffee, The Larry, Press, and Fair Trade Cafe just to name a few. For a brews, you can’t beat The Arizona Wilderness on Roosevelt Row and their food is really great also. I’m originally from Illinois so obviously I love pizza and Spinato’s Pizzeria and Family Kitchen has become my spot because it is true Chicago pizza.

If I’m showing someone around, you have to take a day trip to Sedona or Jerome. Lonesome Valley Brewing is a great spot in Prescott Valley.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first client, Nate! Nate has not only became a consistent client but a good friend, along with man behind the scenes at Matt Young Photography helping with building my website, SEO, and outreach. Without that part of my business functioning properly, I’m not sure my business would be at where it is today.
