We had the good fortune of connecting with Lynn Truong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lynn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always had the entrepreneur in me. My entire family are entrepreneurs. I’m the youngest of 6 older brothers, each of which have their own businesses. My dad had his own business when he used to work. So you can say, entrepreneurship is in our blood.

My main thought process behind starting my business was – my kids. I needed to start my own business so that I can be in control of my own schedule and my own income. The goal is to achieve the flexibility where I can work when I need to and spend more quality time with my kids. I didn’t want anyone dictating my schedule or when I needed to work. I wanted to do things on my own terms. I wanted to be there for their activities, to drop them off at school and pick them up. I wanted to be present in their lives instead of dropping them off at daycare or hire a babysitter (nothing wrong with these options, it’s just my personal choice). Although I know the entrepreneurship road isn’t always bells and whistles, it is a journey I’m willing to take in order to achieve my long term goals, which essentially is be my own boss.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have always been the one with the camera ever since high school. I would voluntarily photograph events, birthday gatherings, backyard weddings, and any other event I could attend. Through out all of these experiences, there was one thing in common- I tell stories. I’m a story-teller. I love telling a story through photographs. My style is timeless and classic. I want the photographs to tell a story throughout multi-generations. I take a mix of candid an minimally posed shots. I believe having a mixture of both styles helps me illustrate a story that will be shared throughout multiple generations.

What sets me apart from other photographers is that I truly truly care about the client’s story. I believe in the importance of documenting a story. Whether it is a love story, happy story, or sentimental story. Our memories are linked to photographs, which can illicit certain feelings and emotions. When I can create an image that is linked to a happy memory, then I have done my job because I want my clients to relive their happy moments through their photos.

Business-wise, I am still building out my business foundation. It hasn’t always been easy because I am still in the early stage of building up my portfolio and attracting the right clients. Right now, I am just trying to establish myself in the photography community, working a full time job as a Pharmacist, and still be present for my 2 young kids. But I must say, having this passion project of mine has been a breath of fresh air. It’s something that has been in the back of my mind for the last 10-15 years, but I never took it seriously. I’m so glad I took the leap of faith to pursue photography more seriously. I’m excited to see where this takes me, but so far I am loving it.

One thing I’ve learned during this journey is that when I am so passionate about something, I am willing to do it for free with no strings attached. Since it’s something I actually enjoy doing and it’s something I would do for free if I could, that’s how I knew I am in the right place. That’s how I knew I am am made for this and that I can pursue my passion project. I’ve also learned that it is possible to have multiple careers AND still be a great mom. It is possible to have it all, as long as you’re in the right mindset and you follow your dreams.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Francisco for views, food, drinks, culture Lake Tahoe for snowboarding/skiing and hiking
San Jose- Santana Row for fine dining and shopping
Napa and Sonoma for wine tasting, fine dining, and picnics
Yosemite for hiking and camping

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my husband. He’s always so supportive of all of my business and creative decisions. Prior to me pursuing photography professionally, I used to do at home photo sessions for my own kids. My husband knew when it was photo day when the backdrops and cameras would come out. He was the one who gave me that push to pursue my passion project – photography. He’s also the best and most present dad I know. He takes care of the kids when I need to be away for a shoot or project. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without him!
