Meet Eric Rosenberg | Finance Writer, Speaker, and Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Rosenberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My first job after college I worked as a bank manager. In that role, I worked seven to seven on weekdays, and Saturday mornings were likely coming my way as well. That work schedule taught me a lot about work/life balance, and the next stage in my career had me working roughly eight to five in corporate finance and accounting roles.
Shortly after leaving the bank, I started a little personal finance blog as a side hustle. Over time, I learned how to treat my hobby as a business and my online income began to grow. That side hustle grew to a point where I earned enough for a full-time living on the side.
When I quit my old day job to go full-time, I took full control over my work schedule. I love being able to take a break in the afternoon to take my kids to get ice cream, go to a doctor’s appointment without asking a boss for permission, and have the freedom to travel whenever I want.
As long as I get my work done by the deadline, my clients are happy. Wherever my laptop is can be my office, and I can always choose to work from home, a coffee shop, or anywhere else with internet and power outlets.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m an independent business owner with no employees. I’m primarily a freelance writer focused on finance, technology, and travel topics. I also speak at conferences and businesses regularly, typically on financial education topics. I also offer content marketing consulting for businesses in the finance and tech industries.
As demand grows, I’ve expanded to also run a small content marketing agency, Finance Media Experts, focused on written education, SEO, and thought leadership content for finance and technology businesses, from startups to the Fortune 500.
Like all small businesses, there are good months and bad months and I’ve learned a ton along the way. But I wouldn’t change what I do and love helping people improve their finances while earning a living from full-time self-employment.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve had several friends visit me in sunny Southern California. My favorite stops around the Ventura area include a walk down the pier, a visit to our newly pedestrian-only Main Street, and lunch or dinner at one of our incredible Mexican restaurants. It’s not the biggest city around, but I love the sleepy surfer vibe. A Saturday or Sunday stop at the Downtown Ventura or Oxnard Harbor farmers markets is always a good time. Don’t miss the tamales at the farmers markets!
If there’s time, I love taking visitors for a morning in Ojai to enjoy a good coffee and a walk around the Ojai Arcade and Libbey Park. Other nearby highlights are easy to find in Carpinteria (Linden Avenue and Padaro Beach Grill), Oxnard (a few fun museums), Camarillo, and beyond.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout to the online personal finance community that’s educated me and cheered me on as my personal finance blog grew to a full-time online income.
I wouldn’t be where I’m at today if it were not for Sam Dogen and The Yakezie, a personal finance blogger group he founded over a decade ago. FinCon, a financial media conference founded by Phil Taylor of PT Money, is where I learned to build my business and connected with my first freelance clients. CardCon, a credit card and media conference started by Jason Steele, further helped me spread my wings and find even bigger success online.
