How do you think about work life balance?


24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week. Junior investment bankers regularly work 80-90 hours a week. Many other high profile professions require the same level of commitment. Often those on the outside claim that working 80-90 hours a week is bad/wrong/terrible/silly/etc but we’ve spoken with so many folks who say working that much has been the best decision of their life – it allowed them to develop a deep and strong skill set far faster than would have been possible otherwise. In other words, by working 2x the hours, they were able to generate 5x or more the rewards. And depending on where you are in your career, investing heavily in your skills and competence can pay dividends for a long time.

I believe I have really good work life balance now. Since my business has evolved, I have been able to bring it to a place where I can now work when I want from wherever I want. Of course I do still have a long way to go to get to where I want to be and to reach complete freedom. But, I do believe that since I worked really hard the past 3-4 years on building a personal brand, growing my social media presence, and immersing myself into opportunities, I have now been able to create a life with a lot more freedom than I had before. Work life balance is so important and being able to enjoy working is what I always dreamt now. Now as I work, it doesn’t feel like a job to me. I genuinely enjoy it and want to do because I love what I do and I have intermixed my life with my business. So literally sharing my life helps my business grow, especially on social media. Work life balance is something I’m still trying to figure out with starting this business. Aside from my business, I work a full time job so finding time to spend with loved ones or focus on self care can be difficult. I’ve always found it difficult to say no to customers but have quickly realized I can’t say yes to everyone if I still want to have some time to myself. Work life balance is not a one-time achievement for me but an ongoing process that requires consistent evaluation and adjustment. As professional demands change, it is necessary to reassess priorities and make changes to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Similarly, personal demands and responsibilities fluctuate, requiring flexibility and adaptability in managing one’s time and energy. Effective time management, having competent co-workers / team, creating clarity in roles, and optimizing every team members’ strengths is crucial in achieving my work-life balance. Making sure to carefully step into new professional demands as I forecast my personal life’s needs has been easier the as my professional career has matured. As my personal and family life has evolved I have become better at managing the evolving balance between company, personal and family needs. Factoring in owning and managing your own company often feels like your company is one of your own children. Like children, companies have developmental needs as the company matures over time. Starting the company before having children, offered me the opportunity to be fully focused on the start up and initial stages of building the company. My company’s two components, recovery and the outdoors, are what keep me balanced. Currently the company is more mature, many personal and professional lessons have been learned along the way offering coresponding growth. Parallel development managing my personal life and relationships has happened over the last 14 years. Managing my personal recovery is strengthened by my work offering the opportunity for recovery to others. Service is a significant pert of my personal life and practice in my recovery.
