We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony Bynum and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tony, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
dedicated to getting up and outside before the sun comes up! Never be late. ever . . .

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like to shoot loose but focus on simplicity when I can. I’m most proud of creating images that tell as complete a story as I can and that provide the information that helps people think more about what’s possible or what could or should be.

I have been blind in my left eye since I was about two, and red-green color blind forever. I had never considered any of it a hindrance, in fact, it never crossed my mind until I went to match clothes. Lucky for me, I only wear grays, browns, and greens so I almost always match. Every so often, I’ll ask my wife or one of my three grown daughters if my clothes match or what color a certain car is, etc.

Photographically I believe people should combine their passions and their knowledge when making images. Use your life’s lessons and what you’ve learned that is unique to you. I’m also an enrolled member of the Grand Ronde Tribe (a federally recognized indigenous community, our reservation is in north-western Oregon), I think my upbringing and exposure to various cultural customs, lifestyles, stories, and rituals have helped me slow down and better understand the land and the people – or at least be more observant of them.

Photography is a difficult way to make a living, so If you’re going to try it, you better love every moment of what you do in life, or you’ll never make it. It has to be who you are, not what you do.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite places to hang out or visit are wild areas like Glacier National Park, or south and central Alberta, or areas with big views – the prairies of central and eastern Montana.

I also enjoy art, so places where art is a theme, no matter what kind, are unique places to me.

I’m not much of a tour guide, but if you want to see wildlife, great landscapes, and stay fit doing it, I’m your guy!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My clients who trust me to come back with results that exceed their expectations. My family that never says no.
