Meet Dominic Bustoz | State Farm Insurance Agent

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominic Bustoz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominic, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted a career that I could financially support my family as well as make an impact on my community. A big motivator for me was all the GoFundMe’s people were posting for funeral costs or hospital bills etc because they didn’t have the proper insurance coverage to help in their times of need.

What should our readers know about your business?
I own and operate my State Farm Insurance Agency. What sets me apart is also what I am most proud and excited about. It’s the focus I have for my clients as well as the level of community involvement I try to maintain. My mission as an agent is not to just grow my business as quickly as possible, but to educate and serve my clients to prepare them for life’s obstacles to come. Something as simple as a life insurance policy can save families from financial distress at their time of grief, or having the proper liability coverages on their vehicle can make sure their taken care of in the event of an accident. Since becoming an agent 2 years ago I have sponsored 4 youth athletic teams and donated to my children’s school fund multiple times. I have also sponsored 3 youth’s athletic camp fees from underprivileged areas of my community to make sure they were able to pursue their dream of developing in the sports arena. How I got to where I am today can be answered best in one word “grit”. I have tried my hand in multiple small businesses along the way and all experiences have helped shape me into the person I am today. Nothing was easy as I had to learn and overcome obstacles like staffing, expanding profit margins, ROI projections, increase in overhead costs and more! As any entrepreneur will tell you, nobody is successful overnight and it’s the ones that are “too dumb to fail” that will come out on top. As the bread winner of my family and the only income stream, I had no choice, but to figure it out. At times that meant I needed to have multiple businesses going at once to make sure there was enough to keep food on the table and lights on in the house. I knew I wanted my kids to be raised by their mother at home, not daycare, so I shouldered all of the financial burden to allow my wife to stay home with our daughters. It was stressful and overwhelming at times, but I believe it was invaluable to our family and I wouldn’t change a thing.
I would love the world to know that success is relative and determination can get you far in life. Don’t be afraid to fall because without falling, you don’t know how to pick yourself up and keep going. Don’t be afraid to fail, because failure builds character and will push you to work even harder. Other entrepreneurs I have spoken too have always voiced the “what if it doesn’t work.. what if I can’t do it” questions. My answer has and will remain consistent, “what if it does.. what if you can”? Being an entrepreneur is not for everyone, but anyone can do it. You just have to dig deep and want it. You have to know the road isn’t easy, but if you stay consistent, work hard, keep your feet on the ground and your head to the sky the end result is worth it.
I’m not the smartest man in the world and I have not always made the right choices in life, but I have always tried to learn from my mistakes and build on my successes. I have always known I wanted to give back to my community and if nothing else, my brand is living proof that you don’t need a fancy diploma from an Ivy League school to be able to live your dream, support your family and be there for your community. Put the needs of others first and you will never be disappointed.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First and foremost we would visit 2 of my favorite restaurants. Comedor Guadalajara for brunch and then Los Dos Molinos for dinner. Both are local, family owned businesses that have been staples in the community for decades. The food is incredible and the staff really goes above and beyond to make you feel like family each and every visit. I’ve never taken someone to either place that didn’t love it and go back on their own. Hopefully its basketball season, I would reach out to another entrepreneur who made it big and friend of mine, Gil Negrete, of Valley Injury Lawyers to catch a Suns game! Gil is an AZ native who came from humble beginnings, acquired his law degree and opened his own firm where he has since helped his community in more ways than can be counted and to top it off, he’s great company to be around and always up for a good time with friends!
Before he left town we would grab drinks at a place I love and again, a local business started by an AZ native and friend of mine, “Casey’s Woodshed”. It’s a small “dive bar” that has some of the most amazing bar food around! The wings are so flavorful and always on point! The drinks are crafted by the owner Brandon Casey who is an accomplished mixologist with a drink in the Smithsonian! You can have good eats with great drinks without braking the bank!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are 2 other Insurance agents that were crucial to my involvement and success as an agent. Jacob Rosell and Chris Wing, Both agents were there for me to answer all questions I had before making my decision to go for it. Their mentorship and assistance has been constant through my start up as an agent and are always there to help me in any way possible. Without them guiding me I know I would not have made it.
