We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Khan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, how do you think about risk?
I believe that most things that are worthwhile in life have associated risk. But, by doing your homework/research, you can minimize the risk so that it becomes a calculated risk that you are able to handle no matter how it turns out.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our business started during the pandemic when cattle prices dropped precipitously on the open market, while low-quality processed beef prices soared. We were fortunate to enjoy top-quality beef from our ranch, which we shared with friends. This led us to a pivotal decision: to venture into the business of raising cattle for farm-to-table distribution.

At Moon River Beef, we focus on a holistic approach to raising cattle so that we can offer the best tasting, premier, pasture-raised beef while prioritizing the overall well-being of the animal, the environment and the community.

Farmers and ranchers are stewards of the environment. We earn our livelihood by caring for the land on which our livestock is raised.

Through conscientious practices, such as employing no-till farming techniques and abstaining from fertilizers and pesticides, we aim to maintain a healthy, sustainable environment. Our dedication also extends to achieving net-zero carbon neutrality, a vital step in reducing our carbon footprint.

Our cattle play a crucial role in this cycle; as they graze on the land that we farm, they naturally contribute to soil enrichment by stomping the litter and urea into the ground, generating nutrients in the soil.

Unlike other beef businesses, we are responsible for each step of the process. What we do is as far from industrialized meat as you can get. All of our holistic practices not only make for healthy and happy cattle, but they help to conserve soil and precious water resources.

Each season we select our best heifers and steers for feeding in our exclusive Moon River Pasture on the serene Verde River. While most of the Verde River is closed to grazing, our private river access allows us to raise a select number of cows in this unique riparian habitat which cannot be found anywhere else in the state of Arizona. On this pasture, our select Black and Golden Angus cattle have access to free-flowing Verde River water and a diverse ecosystem of plant life that provides them with an essential mix of minerals and nutrients. This unique diet leads to better cattle and better beef.

Our cattle are also third-party, age-source verified and raised free of antibiotics and growth hormones, resulting in the highest quality, best-tasting beef possible.

Moreover, we prioritize educating consumers about our practices, empowering them to understand how their choices directly impact environmental well-being. By sharing our journey and methodologies, we strive to encourage a greater appreciation for sustainable agriculture, regenerative farming and a healthier planet for all.

We just recently updated our website and have launched our Moon River Beef Meat Subscription Boxes.
