Meet Surface Refinements | Decorative Wall and Surface finishes

We had the good fortune of connecting with Surface Refinements and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Surface Refinements, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was always encouraged by my parents to explore my creative side, which started as a love for drawing and painting. I have spent most of my life in one artistic endeavor or another. This led to pursuing a career that could support that passion, and I feel very fortunate to be able to turn that passion into a lifelong career. Despite the hard work involved , I feel grateful every day for the opportunities that we are blessed to have!
The challenges of being a business owner are numerous, but dedication, persistence, and a true love of our work guide us to be innovative and to have adaptability.
Our field is constantly evolving. We are always experimenting with different materials and techniques, and more often than not, trial and error are the best teachers! We have developed our signature and trademark over the years, and we strive to push the boundaries and envelope. Oftentimes our best work is a result of getting right out of our comfort zones! The satisfaction and joy of seeing a clients reaction to a transformed space never grows old. It keeps us excited about our work. We want our work to not only transform a space, but to tell a story and evoke emotion. We want to make sure the final product is a true reflection of our clients personality and style. Creating spaces that are not just seen but felt. It’s about leaving a mark of beauty and quality in every space we touch.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey to becoming a professional in the field of decorative wall finishes began with a formal education in fine art, where I learned the fundamentals of art history, color theory and various artistic techniques. The real learning came from hands on training and real life experience. The challenges of owning your own business and particularly one that is physical and mental can be exhausting at times, but that is where the passion kicks in and makes it so rewarding! One of the greatest rewards has also been meeting so many wonderful people over the years. That has been so fulfilling and many have become close friends. What a beautiful blessing!
What we bring to the table is the ability to create one of a kind finishes that are customized to each space in color, scale and uniqueness. Every project we work on provides the opportunity to bring something new and personal for each client. Our approach is definitely not cookie cutter! Every wall is a blank canvas and there are too many options to have to repeat anything twice!
We are committed to quality and detail. We are ALL about the details and the pursuit of excellence.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We love Francine’s, the outdoor patio at Schmooze when the weather is perfect, Virtue and Eddie V’s. I definitely recommend a few days up in Sedona! The Enchantment Resort is where we like to escape from the rigors of our work and just rejuvenate our mind and bodies! Love supporting the Arts and going to plays at The Herberger on Sunday afternoons.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate our shoutout to a collective group of mentors, artisans and designers and my family. The support and encouragement of my family has been fundamental in our journey. Growing up in an environment that valued the arts provided the initial spark for my interest in decorative finishes. Shoutout to the talented community of Interior Designers that provide us the opportunities to create our finishes for their projects. Shoutout to my first Mentors, Lori Lemare and Andrejs Ritins , experienced artisans and instructors who introduced me to a whole wide world of decorative finishes decades ago. Their experience, skill and passion were infectious and laid the foundation for my career in this field.
