Meet Devine Carson | Master’s Level Clinician & Mental Health Advocate

We had the good fortune of connecting with Devine Carson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devine, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My private counseling practice is called Devine Intervention. I came up with the name to play off of my first name Devine, which is spelled differently than what it is known. I have always been intimidated by the strong meaning of the name Divine – which often relates to godly impact or surpassing excellence. When it comes to mental health in general, because it is something I have always been passionate about I felt it would be completely fitting to have the meaning of Devine Intervention associate the life changing experience you will receive by working with me through your mental health concerns, trauma or just having a safe space to process your emotions.
What should our readers know about your business?
As a young, black woman, I have always had to work twice as hard and prove that I am just as good, if not better in my field. When people think of mental health, because it was such a taboo in minority communities, it took time and patience to figure out why WE (as in the black community) did not prioritize our mental health as a high priority as other health concerns such as physical and spiritual. Growing up, I seen undiagnosed disorders resort to coping in destructive and maladaptive ways, which I myself at a period of time did not address that I was experiencing anxiety and depressive symptoms. I started to adopt the narrative that I wanted to be the change I wanted to see and from there my passion for mental health began. I then spent both my undergraduate and graduate school strengthening that passion with education and clinical experience which led me to becoming the therapist I am today. Not only do I have a private practice, I also have been the clinical director over a wide variety of out-patient clinics across the valley.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Those who know me, know that outside of work I am an aesthetic girl! I love finding trendy restaurants that have great food, ambiance and of course photo opportunities! I also really enjoy hiking and seeing the beautiful landscape that Arizona has to offer. Being originally from Michigan, I never get tired of seeing the mountains!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I truly believe that I would not be the woman I am today if it wasn’t from my parents and grandparents. God truly blessed me with having such a strong, supportive and uplifting foundation that has always challenged me to be my best self and never let anything stop me from accomplishing my goals. I want to give a very special shout out to my late grandmother Evelyn Marie Estes, who was a force to be reckoned with and have and will always be the blueprint.
