We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Casey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sean, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“You must always strive to be the best, but you must never believe that you are.” -Juan Manuel Fangio”

This a fantastic ethos to live by. It is the essence of humble excellence. Business, racing, and life itself are all full of competition, along the way we sometimes even find things we have a real talent for. However, greatness only comes from having the drive to be the best. No matter how good we are, we can always be better. Having that recognition, and taking ownership, is vitally important. It keeps us in touch with our roots, and even when we have great successes, it reminds us where we started. It also means never looking down on someone, as we are not superior to anyone else. Ultimately, keeping humility along with our success is the ideal we should all aspire to.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Fetterhund Motorsports is a small racing team participating in endurance racing motorsports events. Our races range from seven to twenty-four hours with a team of four drivers. The team is co-owned by Sean Casey and Sarah Schreffler. Our funding is derived from the fees paid by co-drivers. This keeps us in business despite very thin margins. Additionally, we offset some costs through sponsorship. Sponsorship is a great tool, but has to be approached with the understanding that our racing has to provide a strong return on investment for the sponsor, and can be measured in monetary value.

Fetterhund Motorsports is the culmination of four years of planning before the first penny was even spent on start-up costs. Many long hours of labor and a large dose of blood, sweat, and tears has us now steady financially and competing for championships. Starting any business is a long and ardorous path, one beset by many failures and hours of self-doubt. In racing, the risks become even higher and the rewards less tangible.

To overcome these doubts and challenges takes passion. Passion drives motivation, motivation builds discipline, discipline leads to success. Having a dream, a willingness to fight for that dream and the perseverance to never give up is crucial. Importantly, having the humility to listen to advice and to continue learning is key. In this, or any industry, even if you work for yourself, you can’t survive if you try to go it alone.

One core tenet of Fetterhund Motorsports is to give people a chance. In fact, more than one racing driver saw their first laps in wheel-to-wheel racing from behind the wheel of our #528 BMW racecar. It drives us to be an ally of the amazing ShiftUp Now Foundation. They work hard to get women an equal chance and footing in motorsports, they aim to bridge the massive gaps in funding and sponsorship spend available to female athletes. I know how hard it is, so being able to support such a great cause is our way to give back and use our business as a platform to create positive change in the sport and industry we love.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Phoenix is a fantastic metropolitan area with so much to offer. What is available to do depends on the time of year. During the winter months there are miles of great trails at South Mountain Park (largest municipal park in the country!) and nearby stables for horse-back riding. During the spring and summer months it is popular to go to the river or one of the nearby lakes to catch a break from the intense heat. We have the weekly car meetup at the Pavilions, Highline Autos Cars and Coffee, Barret-Jackson and Mecum auto auctions. Plus for the motorsports lovers we have multiple racetracks including a drag strip, road courses, and an oval track. A trip to the awesome Radford Racing School is a must. And food? Phoenix is a food city. We have several great chefs that set up shop in Phoenix from pizza, to steak, to patisserie, it is easy to get stuffed from great food. Phoenix has great night life as well. From old town Scottsdale, to Mill Ave in Tempe, as well as some great downtown areas in Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert, or the entertainment district in Glendale by the stadium. Sports for the people who don’t enjoy motorsports…. We have a ton of that too. Football, Baseball (especially spring training!), Soccer, Basketball (March Madness!), and even Ice Hockey. Of course, who can forget the Phoenix Open, which shows that even pro-golf can get a bit rowdy.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A huge shout out to my amazing wife, Sarah, who, without her love and support, chasing my crazy dream simply would not be possible. She has always been there and sacrificing to ensure I can do what I do. She is an accomplished professional musician and knows the challenges of performing at a high level. She often is my sounding board to ensure I have clearly thought-out plans and ideas. Having someone who can listen and give great feedback is so important to success.
