We had the good fortune of connecting with Jane Spicer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jane, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Our core value at Daphne’s Headcovers is; We must do good while we are doing well. So social impact is extremely important to us. My belief is that at first we take care of ourselves ( put your oxygen mask on first), then we take care of our family. Once this important nucleus is taken care of its our responsibility to help others.

I impact my local community by serving on boards of non profits. As a company we also provide scholarships to local kids going on to University. Globally we build wells in Africa so women and girls have the opportunity to work and go to school.

As a team we meet and discuss social issues that are important to us and then choose those charities to support. I have been so fortunate to be in Africa and see the impact our wells ( clean, safe drinking water) make to a village. And to be at the announcement of our scholarships. Some of them are family tree changing, not just life changing. I feel this it the greatest gift my success can provide to me and to our community.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I studied art in University and I am sure my professors would be surprised that I used it to create golf club covers. For me the creation of designs and the creation of a long running ( 48 years) creative and happy company are both acts of innovation.
I owe a lot of my success to tenacity and endurance. I’ve always been willing to take the next step, been curious enough to dream about what is around the next corner and had enough endurance to see what each discovery could lead to. I liken it to hiking. Some days the trail is easy and one flies along, other days it seems too long and too steep. But if you get up each day and face it as it is you will always get to the end.

No entrepreneurial journey is easy and at various times I’ve had to find ways to keep going. It could be the challenge of the present moment, the curiosity to see if I could make a goal or the sheer determination to prove someone wrong when they told me I couldn’t do it.

For any entrepreneurs out there I hope you will face the set backs as challenges, really celebrate the wins and know the losses are only temporary and just lessons disguised as something scarier. Just learn from it, make the changes you need and keep going. The journey is worth it!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am so fortunate as my best friends live in the same city but if she lived out of town this is what I would plan. We would start with sunrise hikes one day on Toms Thumb and another on Granite mountain. Après hike would be breakfast at Proof at the Four Seasons on their lovely patio.

Midday we would alternate between being pool side and golfing at one of my favorite golf courses. The Arizona Biltmore and Gray Hawk are two favorites. And then maybe a pre happy hour round at the short course at Mountain Shadows.

Mid week we would head to Sedona for a few days of hiking, spa treatments and dinner at sunset at Mariposa for the amazing sunsets on the red rocks.

If there was a play at Gammage we would attend with a group of friends and go out to dinner after wards at Sel in old town or Starfish.

I would also make sure we had enough quality time in my garden or around my fire pit for great conversation, laughter and us time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to many people that have supported me along the way. Daphne, my Mum and our company namesake for her unwavering support and fierce belief that I could create a global company.
My closest friends who are powerful women themselves who loved me when my business was small and scruffy and always encouraged me to keep going even during the hardest of times and now they shout my praises with unabashed joy and pride.
And of course to my grown kids. They have always been my North Star and the reason for taking just one more step when things were tough.
