Meet Dr. Brendan McCarthy | Naturopathic Doctor, Podcaster

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Brendan McCarthy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Brendan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
This is such a personal and intimate question. The answer is strongly tied to my family and what I would not do to keep them safe and healthy. In the third year of medical school, my son was born with a very rare kidney disorder that required my wife to quit working and my son to receive around the clock medical care.
It was at this point where I could’ve dropped out of medical school and picked up a job as a waiter (the only thing I had done prior to school) or I could do something audacious.
Just prior to medical school, I’d completed a masters degree in acupuncture. I had planned on using this degree in conjunction with my medical degree to specialize further in alternative medicine.
So instead of dropping out of school and accepting all the debt I had incurred without having the degree that could help pay for it, I opened up an acupuncture practice. I use the furniture from our small one room apartment to decorate the small waiting room in my new clinic. Nothing ever came easy, nothing was ever guaranteed. All I knew was that I needed to support my family through this crisis.
I began to practice acupuncture between classes and on weekends. In this way, I worked my way through medical school and supported my family at the same time.
Once I graduated from naturopathic medical school, and became a licensed naturopathic medical doctor, I included those therapeutics into my already growing acupuncture practice.
As my son became more stable, and my wife was able to return to work, she joined me in the practice. Together, we built the practice into the dynamic clinic it is today.
What should our readers know about your business?
The true measure of success as a care provider is the providing of care. I measure success in the results I see with the patient in my care.
We treat women who are consistently underserved in the medical system we find ourselves in. We treat male fertility and low testosterone. We treat menopause all these things fall within our purview, but at the end of the day where we shine is the ability to improve someone’s quality of life, really looking for and doing our best to effect a cure.
We have never been driven by a bottom line. There’s never been a number that we have pushed to achieve, it has always been about the single individual in the room at the moment. There are many times when I have felt that if I went to medical school all those years only to be able to see this one patient at this one moment and make a change in this one person‘s life. It was worth it just for this case.
I truly love what I do because the opportunity I have every day to improve the quality of life of the people I see.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Boating at Lake Pleasant, Dinner at Buck and Rider, Hiking South Mountain, Breakfast at Snooze and then walking around Scottsdale.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
That’s easy – my wife. I would not be the man, the doctor, or the father I am without her love and support.
