We had the good fortune of connecting with Sebastian Milo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sebastian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For me, it was simply to create a space for my voice & the voice of other content creators in the boxing landscape. For many years I have always worked for others & have been studying the business from a social media & content perspective and I felt it was time to launch my own in the boxing media space.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was born in Manhattan, New York in 1997 to Colombian and Italian parents. Growing up in a very diverse household I grew to learn multiple different languages from a young age, being fluent now in three and proficient in others. Raised primarily in Bayside, Queens until the age of 10, I later moved to Mediglia, Milano, Italy in 2008 and attended the beginning of middle school in Italy. My time in Italy exposed me to a new culture and sports like soccer which would become my eventual passion. Since that experience I knew I wanted to be a part of sports and the business behind how organizations, leagues and teams are run & operate. After living in Italy for a year I returned to the USA to finish middle school and high school in New York, but my traveling adventures only just began. From living in Barcelona and Alicante, Spain in 2014 to then returning to Italy to live in Roma in 2018 and working for AS Roma, one of the largest and most historic clubs in the soccer world, to traveling and experiencing new cultures in France, Turkey, Spain, Malta, Portugal, Colombia, and many others, to working with many famous athletes and sports organizations they all have opened the doors for me to be able to tell my story and experiences in sports, travel, life and business. My experiences from meeting new people, interacting in different languages, learning about new cultures and being a part of a passionate soccer fandom have shaped me into who I am today. Traveling to many countries gave me a passion for communicating and using storytelling, not just in sports but also in journalism as a whole to express my views and those of others without a voice. That communicative story-telling passion also inspired me to better communicate and educate myself in business & economics of sport.
As for academics,I graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Journalism then pursued my Master of Science in Sports Business & Global Media from New York University, graduating Cum Laude in 2021.
As a professional with nearly 8 years of experience beginning when I was just 18, sports & media have always been my passion. A passion of mine since my beginnings of working in professional sports. I have always enjoying learning and being immersed in the business of sports and specifically the economic & business structures of team operations. Since those young age experiences, sports and travel have become my passion, because of my experiences and linguistic skills many opportunities in the sports world have opened up for me in terms of my professional career. My experiences have made me realize since I was a kid that I want to pursue a career in sports business and media. My experiences have ranged from content development, media strategy, production as well as on air work. However I have also had the opportunity to experience the financial & business aspect of sports from team operations and running an organization as well as media strategy on a domestic, and international level. Ultimately being involved in the business aspects of sports and being able to intertwine my journalistic skills and sports business academic background has solidified my passion for working in sports media & business.
As of so far, I have worked for some of the following exceptional teams/companies that I am dearly grateful to, including; Evander Holyfield & Real Deal Promotions, New York Cosmos, Philadelphia Union, AS Roma, FC Bayern Munich, DAZN & CABRA Sports & now my own businesses #WHYSOSOCIAL LLC & The Boxing Mob.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Born & raised in New York, I now live in Los Angeles. However there are tons of places in both great cities. For me, food & sports are top priorities. In New York there are great Italian spots like Keste Pizzeria & Vino on Fulton St & in Los Angeles another great spot called La Parolacchia Osteria in Long Beach.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people & companies who I need to give credit to for making me the man I am today. Of course my family & friends who have supported me. I also would like to shoutout mentors of mine who have inspired me such as Evander Holyfield, Bernard Hopkins & companies such as DAZN, AS Roma, New York Cosmos & so many others I have been fortunate to work for & learn along the years.
