We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Serkland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
One quote I really like and often return to comes from the Jack Johnson song of the same name “Don’t let your dreams be dreams.” Everyone has a dream, a vision of what their life should be. Unfortunately, very few people actually take the actions necessary to make their dreams happen in reality or even believe it’s possible. Dreams are wonderful and there’s no reason why they have to remain just that, dreams.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Serkworks Art Labs specializes in the art of mad science. It all began with a simple question “If I was an evil genius, where would I go to find everything I need to carry out my nefarious plans.” I was surprised and a bit shocked to learn that such a place didn’t really exist. Realizing that this was an entirely untapped market. I took the opportunity to build the foundation for the world’s first mad science supply company. So if you want to spruce up your secret hideout you’re in luck. We have a line of decorative art prints perfect for making a home sweet home out of your hollowed-out volcano, underwater laboratory, or foreboding castle stronghold. If you’re planning to take over the world you should look good doing it, so Serkworks Art Labs carries a line of fashionable apparel and accessories perfect for even the most discerning of supervillains. Serkworks Art Labs even has something for the amateur mad scientist in training. We carry an assortment of experimental lab products to help you get started. Basically, if you have a love of robots, aliens, zombies, and other imminent threats to humanity, we probably have just the thing for you. This link of work has presented its unique challenges there aren’t a heck of a lot of evil geniuses running around plotting to take over the world. Some might say that this is a good thing, but it’s bad for business. I deal with a very niche almost non-existent market. That can be challenging, but I started to notice that not everyone who gravitated to my work had their minds set on world conquest. There are also a lot of do-gooders out there who are way into science and nerdy stuff and who aren’t afraid to let their geek flag fly.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Truth be told I’ve been spending most of my time bunkered down in my underground lair but when I feel it’s the right time to return to socializing and venturing out into the city there are a few places I would want to take my fiends and would highly recommend to anyone new to the valley. I would recommend getting up bright and early and hiking one of the trails on the White Tanks mountain range particularly the waterfall trail, if timed right the water will be flowing making it a perfect ending to the trail. Then I would suggest wracking any calories we burned by indulging in a hearty breakfast at The Place in Phoenix. Then we could trek out to the Goldfield Ghost Town near Apache Junction for an afternoon discovering the old mining town. Eventually making our way back to Phoenix and grabbing some tasty finger food at The Duce, a warehouse style adult food and game venue. Next, we could swing by Sweet Republic for some artisan ice cream on our way to Valley Bar for drinks, a hidden speakeasy accessible only though an unassuming back alley. If that wasn’t enough we could then bar hop over to the Churchill a unique gathering place constructed from old shipping containers where you can take in a game of horseshoes and sip on a cocktail while doodling in your sketchbook. Because of my fondness for science and discovery we would try to line up our adventure with one of the many themed adult nights at the Arizona Science Center. For a late dinner, we could shoot over to The Breadfruit rum bar where they have an incredible seafood menu. After dinner, we could relax awhile and smoke a cigar on Breadfruit’s comfy outdoor patio. Last but not least, we’d have to top the night off with some retro video game fun at the totally awesome Cobra Arcade. Of course, this would be a day like no other, so you could spread all these sights, sounds and tastes out over the stretch of a week and then even throw in a visit to the Tempe Improv for some extra laughs…but that’s just me.

A creative company who never ceases to amaze me is Steam Crow, a husband and wife team who took their love of monsters and built an incredible brand and community around their passion. They created the idea of an entire hidden world where monsters are real and have many enthusiastic fans who don uniforms, attend camp outs and express themselves freely. Steam Crow is an inspiring, multi-faceted fandom created through an impressive and highly creative and innovative brand.
