We had the good fortune of connecting with Winding Road Theater Ensemble Artistic Director Team and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Winding Road Theater Ensemble, what principle do you value most?
One of our core values as an ensemble and as a theater company is connection. Human beings are wired to communicate through stories, with theatre recreating oral traditions of storytelling that reach back millennia. It is part of our mission at Winding Road to tell stories that illuminate our humanity (warts and all) and showcase our connections to one another. We want to take our audiences in hand and lead them through stories that will allow them to experience awe, joy, love, despair, grief, anger, discomfort, curiosity, wonder, and relief. We want everyone to be free to feel deeply.

Connection is also a core value because creating theatre is a connective journey. Every person who touches a theatrical production becomes connected to it, and thus it is our duty to ensure that those people feel valued, trusted, and safe with us. Even though we are an ensemble theater, we could not survive without the continued guidance, expertise, and support of our theatre community. Every actor, director, designer, and crew member and their collective experiences inform the production.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Winding Road has a legacy of producing works that are designed to challenge, to inspire, and to illuminate the human condition. As an artistic directing team, we are endeavoring to find and produce works that further that legacy, while also seeking to stretch those boundaries even further. We are especially eager and excited to work on collaborative pieces. This season, we are working on our first ensemble-devised piece. We are also thrilled to be participating in the 5 Acts 5 Macs festival, which was created by our friends at Scoundrel and Scamp Theater.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Alex J. Alegria– Talega Coffee Co, near Arizona Theater Company
Alex Totillo– The Loft Cinema and Casa Video
Tanisha Ray– Tucson Botanical Garden
Denise Blum– MSA Annex
Erin Amsler– Sweetwater Wetlands and Agua Caliente Park

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would be remiss if we did not shout out all the past creatives who worked as a part of the Winding Road Theater Ensemble. Winding Road has a rich past and a treasured legacy, and we are honored to be trusted to continue the journey. We would especially love to credit our most recent Artistic Director, Maria Caprile. Maria’s deep love of stories has been a guiding star for Winding Road, and that light has been essential during this transition.
