We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Soul and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lex, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business back in late 2018 on a whim and faith. I was unhappy at my job and wanted more freedom to create freely. I decided to quit my 9-5 and pursue photography full time.

I saved for 6 months, and quit on Oct 31, 2018. I launched my website on Nov 1st and it all began from there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is my genuine authentic personality, and how I’m able to make a lasting connect with anyone I photograph. Being able to bring out that person’s essence and shine light on them brings me so much joy.

I’m excited for my journey connecting with more artists across the world; singers, rappers, poets, etc. Also working with more black owned brands, or any brands in general.

It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today professionally. I struggled a lot along the way. Mentally, physically, and emotionally.

It was hard putting my work out there into the world. I didn’t have any help from anyone to teach me the ropes. I learned on my own and watched a ton of YouTube videos to sharpen my craft.

A big lesson I had to learn along the way is that, your clients aren’t your friends. It’s business.

I want the world to know that I’m just a little girl at heart, who decided to pick up a camera at 12 years old and I found my passion and purpose to shed light on the underrepresented.

I love to tell a story with my imagery and colors.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my best friend to some cool spots around Bham, of course we have to get food. Some great food spots are Southern Kitchen, the shrimp & grits are to die for. Encore Rouge is a great spot as well, the loaded fries are amazing and reasonably priced.

I would also take them to the Bham Museum of Art, they have beautiful pieces and it’s perfect for some aesthetic outfit pics!

I would also take my friend to the Vulcan, it’s a historical monument looking over the cityscape. It’s beautiful at night time.

And, of course I would take them to one of my events I host monthly; Lex Soul Meetups. A great space to connect with other artists/models/designers etc around the city!
