We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Timm and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, what are you inspired by?
Stories and characters that build into an emotional situation and/or arch.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love to venture into the realm of the fantastic. Even if a story starts out grounded, I love to see the screen dream away into an unknown feeling. Something mysterious yet nothing weird. The surrealistic touches that poke the coals of the imagination. It’s been a journey for me. As a writer/director, I’ve had to be patient while also raising a family. I still have my professional career/job at Universal – for almost 17 years now – after working in production and before that the Sundance Institute. About 7-8 years ago, I started writing again and taking on adaptations, rewrites, etc. Then, I started directing short films again. My experiences in the industry whether on set or at the studio has made me a much better storyteller.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Here in LA, there are SO many places. I love ocean though. Lived on a hosueboat when I was a kid. The Reel Inn is one of my favorites spots. Hiking up Temescal Canyon overlooking the ocean. Then a Godmother sandwich from Bay City deli.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh – I’ll give a shoutout to Jason Marchi. He’s been a creative partner since my twenties. We have started business ventures together. He has invested and helped produce just about every film I’ve ever made. And he’s a good friend to just talk with about life and teliing stories. He’s an amazing short story writer.
