We had the good fortune of connecting with Pinkk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pinkk, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I originally wanted to start off designing clothes and shoes. But life redirected me in the best way possible. I honestly just love fashion as a whole, I consider it an art. So being able to take this dream to another level has been life changing. I really just want to create freely without any restrictions!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is my mindset. I’m a healer at heart and my target audience has mainly been people from my culture, people of color, people who’ve grown in poverty etc. I grew up not having any creative outlet and not having anyone in my culture to look up to in fashion. I want to be that person that the younger generation can look to for inspiration. I grew up with very little money and have experienced financial challenges almost all of my life. So yes, it has been very hard and still is. But I love what I do, and I’ve never doubted that I was gonna get far with this. I always knew my work would positively impact the culture, and I will continue to work towards that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I won’t lie, I’m a homebody at heart, so I don’t go out a lot unless I’m thrifting. I love thrifts stores and antique shops like Buffalo Exchange and have recently discovered Call it New Call it Antique. Other than that I love checking out new cafes and going to DJ sets which have been a new hobby of mine!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, I didn’t grow up with a lot of mentors or people that I felt I could look up to creatively. When I first started styling, I met with other designers and fashion stylists in my city which a few of them I’m grateful to call my friends now. They really taught me to always value my work, and to never leave room for people to question my work or prices. It’s not easy working in fashion in Arizona so it feels good to know I have a few people in my circle I can come to for support!
