We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Steele and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I first started my own business, it was all about having more control over my work-life balance. I wanted to spend more time with my husband, my daughter, and be able to participate in the activities that really mattered to me. That’s still incredibly important, but what I didn’t expect was how much I’d love connecting with the women I photograph. Hearing their stories, seeing their confidence blossom during a session—it’s truly rewarding in ways I never anticipated. The relationships I’ve built have become one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe there are a few things that set me apart as a boudoir photographer. One is that I photograph on both digital and real film, which adds a unique, timeless feel to the photos. Working with film requires a higher level of artistry, knowledge, and precision, which really connects me—and my clients—more deeply to the experience. The second thing is my personality. I have a genuine connection with the women I photograph, and this personal bond becomes an essential part of the session, creating a more meaningful experience for them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Haha, I’m such a homebody! But if my best friend were visiting, I’d probably take them shopping in Old Town Scottsdale. It’s got great local boutiques and fun places to explore. We’d definitely grab dinner at North Italia because their meatballs are to die for!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
While I’ve studied a lot about boudoir photography and the business side of things, and I’ve had some wonderful mentors along the way, the first people I have to credit are my family. Their support has meant everything to me. Secondly, I owe so much to all the brides and clients I’ve worked with over the years—they’re the ones who inspired my transition into boudoir photography. Without their trust and encouragement, I wouldn’t have found this incredible path I’m on today.
