We had the good fortune of connecting with Cynthia Dawson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cynthia, what inspires you?
It’s everywhere—you just have to keep your eyes and heart open! For me, light is such a big one—it sets the mood and tells the story. My kids inspire me so much (even when they’re the chaos in the story). Connection is another creativity booster for me—there’s nothing quite like capturing the bond between people.

I also love pulling ideas from unexpected places—art (both new and old), music playlists, and even a clever ad can all spark an idea. I love seeing what other creatives are doing and then putting my own twist on it. Some of my favorite images have been inspired by other artists. So much magic can happen by challenging yourself to try something new, experiment with fresh ideas, and trust the process. It’s amazing how inspiration can lead you to create something uniquely your own!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is all about capturing genuine connection and emotion—the moments that make your heart full. I have a soft spot for the small, everyday details that might seem ordinary but hold so much meaning, like the way a mom brushes her child’s hair out of their face or the way a kiddo clings to their dad’s hand. Those are the moments I strive to preserve because they’ll mean even more as time goes on. I also love showcasing the unique beauty of Northwest Ohio in a grand way by incorporating stunning landscapes into a family’s photo session to create images that feel personal, timeless, and like art.

What sets me apart is my ability to make sessions stress-free and fun. I love helping families feel at ease, especially kids, by letting them take the lead and explore during sessions. This approach brings out their natural joy and creates images that feel authentic rather than posed.

Getting to this point professionally has been such a journey. It wasn’t always easy—balancing my growing business with raising my kids has definitely come with its challenges. But each challenge taught me resilience and the importance of being flexible and intentional with my time. I’ve learned that connection and storytelling are at the heart of everything I do, and when I lean into that, my work resonates most.

What I want the world to know is that my brand is about more than just pretty photos. It’s about creating an experience that feels meaningful and capturing the people and relationships that matter most. Life moves so quickly and I want families to see the beauty of this season they’re in while they create memories together.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This answer is going to completely out me as a homebody—but I’m okay with that! I always joke with my friends that I don’t get out much, but when I do, it’s usually to one of the incredible local Metroparks in Toledo. There are so many to choose from, and each one has its own charm. I’m especially drawn to parks with water views—Maumee Bay State Park is a definite favorite.

If we’re bringing the kids along (which we usually are), we can’t skip a playground stop. One of our absolute favorites is the Secret Forest at the Toledo Botanical Garden. It’s such a magical little spot for them to explore, and it’s become one of our go-to places to visit as a family.

We’re always game for a little indulgence, and Handels or Oh Deer Diner are our go-to spots for satisfying that ice cream craving!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Wow, this is such a tough question because so many people have helped me along the way! My first mentor was Morgan, a photographer-turned-good-friend who patiently answered all my beginner technical questions about how to work my camera. From there, I found inspiration and support in a small group of online photographers. We tackled projects like a 365 challenge and monthly black-and-white photo shares—those women inspired me in countless ways and were always there as a sounding board.

I also deeply admire Meg Loeks for the way she balances her career with her family. Her drive and thoughtful approach to her business showed me that I could pursue my own goals without compromising on what matters most.

And, of course, I have to give credit to my husband. He surprised me with my first “real” camera and has been my biggest supporter ever since. Honestly, I could go on forever, but I think I hear my cut-off music starting!
