Meet Karlie Hunter | Embroidery Artist & Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Karlie Hunter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karlie, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I learned how to embroider, crochet, and quilt during the initial COVID-19 lockdown. I was working at a nursing home at the time, so it just made sense to learn those “grandma hobbies” as I affectionately call them. Crocheting didn’t stick, but I really fell in love with embroidery! I learned through videos online and trial and error as I made gifts for everyone around me.
Handful of Made started as an Instagram page to share my crafts and DIY projects. A friend and I came up with the idea and the name over ice cream. I wanted it to include the word “handmade” but in a unique way. I also wanted it to be able to grow with me, and something simple like “Karlie’s crafts” just didn’t fit. Soon, I realized that by making it into a business I could make more things for more people and also share what I have learned with others.
At my very first market in Des Moines, I offered 3 different DIY kits, and they were immediately a huge hit! I received a lot of attention and positive feedback at that market. Embroidery businesses aren’t common; I’m usually the only business in my niche at handmade markets, but the art-form has become more trendy over the past few years. As a result, people are hungry to learn the ancient art of embroidery. Now, 2 years after Handful of Made became a business, I offer 17 different DIY embroidery kits and am being requested to host workshops in businesses all over the state of Iowa every month.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When most people think of embroidery, they probably think of their grandma or great-grandma. While this is probably true – the tradition and art of embroidery has been passed down for thousands of generations – I have set out to make embroidery more modern and commonplace. I want more people to know how to embellish their clothing and to make personal art.
My embroidery designs are a reflection of myself. They exhibit my interests, my style, and even my favorite colors. By looking at my art, you can see me in it, and that can be very vulnerable. I think that is why running my business has had a unique role in my development as a person. I have gained self confidence in many areas, including but not limited to being on camera, posting dorky or not-so-perfect content, networking, and finances. Owning a small business has its challenges, but it is through those challenges that we learn and grow. There have been times that I thought it would be better if I quit, but I don’t honestly know what I would do with all my free time if I did! I love what I do, and I am so thankful for all the opportunities that have gotten me this far.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in rural Iowa, so a first-time visitor always gets a tour of the family farm! This normally includes tractor driving lessons from my husband and climbing a grain bin to get a great view of the area. After that, we would have a big meal with my family at my grandpa’s house featuring some amazing dessert my mom made. Our Sunday lunches are my favorite family tradition.
In addition, we would shop the local businesses in the area. We would start at Juniper and Olive in Jewell to get a cute cocktail and a charcuterie board, shop around the other local businesses and then head to Ames. The Ames Main Street is filled with great small businesses and feels like a Hallmark movie. Some of my favorite stores are in the area, and then we would stop and get a meal at either Sweet Caroline’s, The Spice, or Cornbred. These are all local favorites with delicious food!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends have always been my biggest supporters! They always encourage me, give me new ideas, and offer me opportunities to practice. 😉 Whenever I’m feeling frustrated or discouraged, I think back on their kind words to keep going. My mom is probably my top customer, my sister got me hooked on embroidery to begin with, my husband is my biggest cheerleader, and my friends have all bought something and allowed me to teach them and talk endlessly about my business. I’m forever grateful for all their love and support!
I also have an amazing community of small business friends who are willing to share what they’ve learned and offer advice! This journey has been so much more fun and rewarding because of them.
Finally, I want to thank God for giving me my creative ability and inspiration, which normally comes in the middle of nature or a good worship service. He has used Handful of Made to give me greater confidence and has allowed me to step fully into who He made me to be.
