We had the good fortune of connecting with Becky and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Becky, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Growing up in a small town, I envisioned a traditional path for myself—becoming a teacher, getting married, and settling down close to home. But looking back, I see that risk-taking has always been a part of me. My mom loves to tell stories about how I’d come home from school announcing that I had signed up for a new sport or joined a different club, always with my mind firmly made up. She eventually got used to me surprising her.

That instinct to push beyond the expected really took hold in high school when I started to want more for my life. The first big risk came when I was choosing a college. My parents encouraged me to attend a smaller, more affordable school, but I had my sights set on a larger state university. On my own, I applied, secured financial aid, and presented my plan. After the initial shock, my parents supported my decision, and that experience opened doors I never could have imagined.

Initially, I pursued a degree in early childhood education, but by my sophomore year, I felt drawn to something different. I switched to computer science, only to realize after the intro classes that it wasn’t the right fit. I ultimately returned to education and earned my degree, but the biggest risk came after graduation—I chose not to become a teacher at all. My heart just wasn’t in it. Instead, I pivoted into Talent Acquisition at a major banking firm, stepping into the corporate world with no real roadmap.

Over the years, I built a successful career in HR, but deep down, my passion for technology remained. Taking another leap, I found my way back into the tech space. But even that wasn’t enough—I wanted to blend my love for education and technology, so I pursued and achieved a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science. It was another big investment in myself, another step into the unknown, but I knew I had to follow my passion.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started reflecting on my journey and the risks I’ve taken. I realized something was missing—an outlet for creativity. That led me to another leap: photography. I began taking landscape photos, sharing them on Instagram, and even landed a few local exhibitions. It was a risk to put my work out there, but it fed my soul in a way I didn’t expect.

But the biggest risk of all? Opening a Drybar in Tucson as a single parent of three. It was terrifying. The financial commitment, the responsibility, the uncertainty—it was a massive leap. But I’ve never been afraid to bet on myself. I knew that if I set my mind to it, I would find a way to make it work. And the rewards have been incredible. I get to create jobs, build a team where people feel valued, and help women take care of themselves—help them feel good, inside and out. My faith has been my anchor throughout this journey, guiding me to trust in something greater than myself and reminding me that every risk I take is part of a bigger plan.

I don’t know what’s next for me, but I know there will be more risks ahead. And I welcome them. Yes, there’s always a chance of failure, but every failure is a lesson that brings you closer to success. My advice? When considering a risk, think about the worst-case scenario. If you can survive it, then maybe it’s worth going for.

As Mary Oliver once wrote, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” For me, the answer has always been: take the risk.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business is all about creating an elevated, feel-good experience for our clients. At Drybar, we specialize in blowouts—nothing else—because we believe that when you focus on one thing and do it exceptionally well, you can truly stand out. What sets us apart is not just our expertise in hairstyling but also the overall experience we provide—welcoming energy, top-tier service, and a place where clients can relax, feel pampered, and leave feeling their absolute best.

Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. Balancing a full-time job while building my business required a lot of sacrifice, late nights, and unwavering determination. There were challenges along the way—learning how to manage a team of creative stylists, perfecting the customer experience, and navigating the ups and downs of entrepreneurship—but I faced them head-on by staying focused on my vision and surrounding myself with supportive people.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success isn’t about doing it all alone. It’s about having the right team, trusting the process, and always staying true to your core values. I also learned that challenges aren’t roadblocks—they’re opportunities to grow, innovate, and come back stronger.

What I want the world to know about my brand is that it’s built on passion, resilience, and a love for making people feel confident and beautiful. My story is one of hard work, faith, and gratitude, and I hope it inspires others to chase their dreams, no matter how big they seem.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d start the weekend with a warm Tucson welcome at Hacienda Del Sol, a stunning resort with historic charm and breathtaking desert views. After settling in, I’d head to La Encantada, an upscale outdoor shopping and dining destination, for a relaxed evening. Dinner at Blanco is always a great choice—their fresh, flavorful tacos and margaritas never disappoint. Afterward, I’d take a stroll through the plaza, enjoying the twinkle lights and mountain views before calling it a night.

The next morning, brunch at Tohono Chul Garden Bistro is a must. Sitting among the beautiful desert gardens while enjoying their Prickly Pear Bottomless Mimosas is the perfect way to ease into the day. After brunch, it’s time for a little self-care with a visit to Drybar—because who doesn’t love a fresh blowout to feel fabulous for the weekend?

With my hair perfectly styled, I’d head downtown to explore. Tucson’s downtown is full of charm, with colorful murals, unique boutiques, and some of the best coffee shops around. I’d stop at EXO Roast Co. or Presta Coffee for a quick caffeine fix before wandering through the lively streets.

As the sun starts to set, it’s time for dinner at The Hub—a local favorite known for its delicious comfort food and their amazing ice cream. But the night wouldn’t be complete without checking out one of Tucson’s hidden speakeasies. Whether it’s The Still, Tough Luck Club, or Snake and Barrel, each has its own unique vibe and makes for the perfect end to the night.

No trip to Tucson is complete without experiencing the beauty of the desert. I’d start the morning with a hike to Seven Falls in Sabino Canyon. The trail is absolutely breathtaking, leading to stunning waterfalls that make every step worth it. After working up an appetite, The Parish is the perfect lunch spot. Their Southern-inspired dishes, like the Drunken Angel pasta and Parish fries, always hit the spot.

For a little post-hike relaxation, I’d book a massage at Hacienda Del Sol, which also grants access to their serene pools for the afternoon. There’s nothing better than soaking up the sun, sipping a cocktail, and enjoying the peaceful desert surroundings and amazing views!

To wrap up the weekend, I’d take a scenic drive through Saguaro National Park West to catch the sunset. Watching the golden light fade behind the endless landscape of towering saguaros is pure magic and the perfect way to end an unforgettable Tucson weekend.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m incredibly grateful to my supportive family (my three precious children), who I sat down with to get their blessing before starting my business. I knew it would have a big impact on their lives as I balanced a full-time job, being a mom and entrepreneurship. I also thank God for guiding me on this journey and my amazing friends and family for their unwavering support.
