Meet Kevin Caron | Self taught Sculptor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Caron and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The goal was to make art, and the business was a necessary way to do it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been a full-time artist since 2006 and create large scale metal and 3D-printed sculpture. Since I pretty much stumbled into being an artist it’s not much of a surprise that I am entirely self-taught. Aside from learning how to weld, which I did in high school, I’ve taught myself Computer-Aided Design, how to use a forge, trigonometry and various other skills, doing whatever it takes to create what I see in my mind. I’ve sold my sculptures to patrons all over the world including Australia, Taiwan, Luxembourg and the Bahamas. I was chosen as the Phoenix Visual Artist of the Year in 2018, the same year I appeared on national television in an ABC TV 20/20 special.
Most of all I’m proud of my work and how far it has come. I’ve created iconic pieces like Top Knot for the Surprise, Arizona, Civic Center Plaza, invented new 3D-printing processes, and mastered (sometimes) new materials.
The recession and Covid made for challenging times, but I used them as periods to learn and make sculpture that sold after conditions steadied.
After 20 years creating art, I’ve learned a lot of lessons. The biggest: follow my curiosity and always be authentic. People know real when they see it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First I’d find out what interests them. There is so much to see and do here. If we’re staying here in the Valley, I might take them to the Heard Museum, the Musical Instrument Museum, the Desert Botanical Gardens and Boyce Thompson Arboretum. There are so many wonderful restaurants here we’d have fun picking out things that the visitor liked, from fancy resort destinations to funky local spots. One of my favorites is Elements, which provides a beautiful view of the city, but this being a resort town, there are plenty of places to eat and drink.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are way too many people and companies to list them all here. I have had a lot of old time sculptors give me advice and encouragement.
